JACFC Div 1: Three from three for Seneschalstown

Seneschalstown 0-11 St. Colmcille’s 1-06

With top spot and a home semi-final already secured, Seneschalstown made it three wins from three in Division 1 of the Meath Cleaning Supplies All-County Junior Football Championship when seeing off the gutsy challenge of St. Colmcille’s in Fr. Tully Park on Sunday morning.

With neither team having anything to play for, the game was certainly one on the more forgettable side of things, evidenced by the fact that the only score in the opening quarter of the game came from Seneschalstown full-back Seán Reilly. St. Colmcille’s got on the scoreboard with a two point effort in the 16th minute but Seneschalstown restored their early advantage with two quickfire points from the boot of Sean Davis, one of which was a free.

In the 23rd minute Seneschalstown started to put some daylight between the teams when Ryan Finnegan kicked a superb two point effort when he used the wind expertly to draw the ball in from right to left. St. Colmcille’s answered at the other end but the last two points of the half went the home side’s way courtesy of captain Finnegan again and Jack McDonnell after two good moves which Seneschalstown worked smartly. At the interval Seneschalstown lead 0-07 to 0-03.

The Seasiders enjoyed their best spell of the game immediately after half time when they registered 1-03 to go in front by two points. Seneschalstown will be disappointed with the concession of the goal which came less than thirty seconds after the restart.  However, Seneschalstown responded and took control of proceedings once more.

After a wayward period for the home side Seán Davis settled his side with a point in the 42nd minute.  The next score was crucial and it went the way of the hosts when Davis kicked a two point effort having found time and space right on the edge of the arc and now Seneschalstown were in front by the minimum.

Despite having plenty of possession, Seneschalstown struggled to add further scores but did defend well as the Cilles failed to score after the 35th minute. It was fitting that the final say of the game went to Ryan Finnegan who enjoyed a superb outing in the middle of the field as he got the insurance point two minutes from time as Seneschalstown head into the knockout stages of the competition in fine fettle.
