Ladies IFC: Disappointment for St. Michaels

The sun had set on St. Michaels Intermediate championship ambitions long before dusk settled over Martry's excellent facilities on Wednesday evening last. A match speckled with moments of quality saw the St. Michaels ladies inject some much needed impetus into a disappointing campaign where their fate could well be decided in the upcoming relegation campaign.

Both sides came into this game pointless and two tough games now lie ahead for both sides, St. Michaels have table-toppers Boardsmill away next while St. Ultans play second placed St. Colmcilles at home on Saturday Sept. 5th a game they must win to have any chance of reaching the knock-out stages.

The hosts were 0-5 to 0-1 ahead at the end of the opening quarter after Claire Reilly opened the scoring for the visitors. Sinéad McCormack added two more minors before the short whistle but the home side enjoyed a four point interval lead ( 3 frees ) two of the frees were brought forward 50m for back-chat to the referee.                 

The pouring rain made conditions very difficult for both sets of players and scores were hard to come by especially in the second half, but the home side put four unanswered points on their new scoreboard before substitute Lauren Reilly added two second half minors for the St. Michaels girls and an Áine Sheridan major was followed by an Alicia Curtis minor to give the visiting support something to cheer about on a wet miserable evening but it was all too little too late for the girls in red and black.
