Seneschalstown's Orla Finnegan

Donaghmore Ashbourne 3-6 Seneschalstown 3-13

Seneschastown Senior Ladies qualified for the knockout stages of the Kepak Ladies Senior Football Championship following this well-deserved victory over a gallant Donaghmore Ashbourne outfit played in Ashbourne on Wednesday night. With two wins from the opening two games, the team are guaranteed a top two finish in the group and progression to the knock out stages.

Early exchanges had the Furze side well on top and it was Anna Donnelly who open the scoring with a point from play. Donnelly had a good goal chance after weaving her way through the right side of the home defence but the Ashbourne keeper brought off a fine point blank save. Within a minute Anna Wogan had a goal chance but pulled her shot across the goals.  A minute later another Seneschalstown goal chance was superbly dispatched to the top corner of the Ashbourne net by Orla Finnegan who beat a couple of players before side footing the ball calmly into the top right hand corner of the net.

Ashbourne finally got on the scoresheet on 11 minutes with a point from play and followed this up soon after with another point from play. The Seneschalstown rearguard were making it very hard for the home side attack to get into the game with some well-timed interceptions, tackles and getting out to the ball first in the one v one situations.

Seneschalstown hit a bit of a purple patch midway through the half outscoring the home side four points to one over that period. First Emma O’Donoghue made some good ground down the right before chipping over a fine point. Orla Finnegan followed that up with three points in succession with two frees and one from play.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne were awarded a penalty a few minutes before the break which was well dispatched to the net by the centre forward. Moments later, the home team got a fortuitous second goal to go in front for the first time. A shot from the right had side took a wicked deflection and flew past the Seneschalstown keeper. The teams would go in level at the break as Orla Finnegan added to her tally with a pointed free just on the whistle.

The second half commenced with one change to the Seneschalstown side with Caragh Monaghan replacing Kayleigh Fitzgerald. Indeed, Seneschalstown had an early goal chance with Emma O’Donoghue who was well thwarted by the Ashbourne netminder. And with five minutes gone another Seneschalstown goal chance went the wrong side of the sticks this time from Orla Finnegan who had weaved her way on from the left.

It took nine minutes for the first score of the second half when Anna Wogan lofted over a fine point from play. Ashbourne cancelled this out with a pointed free a few minutes later.

From the 15th to the 19th minute of the second half, the visitors put the game out of reach scoring 2-02 in that period. Firstly, Orla Finnegan chipped in with her second goal after a similar run down the left to the earlier chance, but this time made it count. Points followed from Caitlin Dunne and Orla Finnegan from play before Anna Donnelly intercepted an Ashbourne kick out about 40 metres out, headed towards goal before cooly slotting the ball low to the net. Ashbourne did respond with a superb two point free from the centre forward. Caoimhe Clarke and substitute Ruth Commons knocked over further points for the visitors. The home side responded with a third goal as the game entered injury time. Seneschalstown would close the scoring with another point from Finnegan.

Next up for the ladies is their last group game away to Dunshaughlin Royal Gaels in Dunshaughlin on Friday September 4th at 7.30. Keep an eye on the club socials for further details closer to the date.
