Navan O’Mahonys emerged with the points against Oldcastle in Paddy O’Brien Park on Wednesday evening in the second round of the SFC, with a good team performance and two goals in each half key.

O’Mahonys made a bright start, although it was Oldcastle who opened the scoring with an early point. Orlaith Mallon soon levelled matters with a point from play before Ailbhe Leahy found the net in the fourth minute following an impressive run from Lauren Woods.

Both sides kicked a number of wides and an Oldcastle shot on goal bounced off the upright before being delivered to safety. Two further scores from Mallon and an Oldcastle free left three between the sides on the fifteen minute mark. The middle eight also impressed for O’Mahony’s, with Charlie Murray and Milly Clarke-Carolan feeding ball into the forwards/

Leahy’s second goal after winning an Oldcastle kick-out put six between the sides. Oldcastle regained a score before Woods added her name to the score-sheet to leave O’Mahony’s with a two-goal advantage at half time. Collie O’Rourke’s side could well have had more scores on the board, with several missed opportunities in the latter stages of the first half.

O’Mahonys made the perfect start to the second half when Muireann Nelson found the net just 50 seconds after the restart, helped by a good pass from Isabel Thorp. Over the next fifteen minutes, this nine-point lead was kept steady with both sides adding three points – Leahy, Mallon and Sarah Powderly the O’Mahony’s scorers. 

O’Mahony’s also impressed defensively, with Lilly Dwyer making a key block ten minutes into the second half. Sarah Maguire was solid at full back, with Sophia Fitzherbert and Holly McKeigue making key blocks throughout, as well as a good save from Robyn Murray.

After Oldcastle kicked an impressive point, Powderly kicked another point from play to settle her side with twelve minutes on the clock followed by a similar effort from Nelson. Oldcastle finished strongly and kicked three points in a five minute spell to reduce the deficit.

Mallon cut Oldcastle’s momentum down with a goal from play just as the match was entering injury time. Both sides added a score in injury time, with Nelson’s free the last score of the match.
