St. Michaels 0-17, Clann na nGael 4-12

Clann na nGael sent out a statement of intent in the second half of this IFC match played in Cortown on Sunday afternoon last, the winners were mean in defence and impressive in attack but still St. Michaels started the game brightly with fine efforts from play from Matthew Halpin and Gearóid O'Malley, Clann na nGael levelled the match twice in the early stages before they took the lead for the first time in the 12th minute, a lead they would never relinquish. Both sides traded points with CJ Lynch and Declan Reilly posting some fine efforts from play and placed balls. The Athboy side hit a purple patch between the 20th and 23rd minute when they added 1-2 to the scoreboard, but despite that setback the St. Michaels lads to their credit found some momentum late in the half and Lynch, O'Malley and Halpin put four minors on the board without reply to trail by just two at the short whistle, 0-8 to 1-7.

O'Malley reduced that deficit to a point 30 seconds into the new half but it was all downhill for them from that moment forward as they didn't trouble the scoreboard attendant again until the 50th minute. Clann na nGael enjoyed their best spell of the game and added 3-2 without reply in the next fifteen minutes. Matthew Halpin (2 pointer) and corner back Ciaran O'Reilly travelled the length of the Cortown pitch to send over two 2 pointers and another point apiece from O'Malley and Lynch gave St. Michaels renewed hope but it was all too little too late.
