Kilmainham 5-23, Drumconrath 1-13

Kilmainham made the short trip to Nobber on Saturday 22nd August 2026 to take on Drumconrath in round 2 of the Junior B championship. Drumconrath were unlucky to lose out to Kilmainhamwood in round 1, while our lads had to settle for a draw against Moynalty. Our lads new that this was a must win match to keep our hopes alive of getting out of the group. 

Kilmainham were really tuned in for this one and started the match very strong. They controlled possession very well and worked some very good scores. Mickey Hoey and Dylan Morgan were on form and finished some really good team moves. Dylan Morgan, Michael Hoey and Ger Morgan all found the net in the first half as Drumconrath had no answer to wave after wave of Kilmainham attacks. Kilmainham had a convincing lead going in at half-time and they could have been further ahead with the Drumconrath keeper making a few fine saves. 

Half-time score: Kilmainham 3-14, Drumconrath 0-4. 

Our lads were aware that score difference could be a factor in a tight group, so the players were determined to keep the intensity up for the second half. Kilmainham continued to dominate with Hoey and Morgan keeping the score board busy. Mark Newman eventually got his goal, firing high into the Drumconrath net, he also added a couple of nice points in an impressive display. His brother Harry ventured forward and got a rare goal and point. Ger Morgan supplying the pass for his goal. Drumconrath were reduced to 14 players after a dangerous tackle on Michael Hoey when he was on the ground. This sending off galvanised Drumconrath and they enjoyed a good purple patch, where they kicked some nice scores as Kilmainham’s intensity understandably dropped with a commanding lead. Kilmainham emptied their subs bench and lads got some deserved championship game time. When referee Peter Skelly blew his whistle for full-time it was Kilmainham who took home the 2 points on offer with a 22-point winning margin. 

Mickey Newman and his management team and players will be happy with this performance, our work rate and efficiency in front of goal a real positive. The lads will know that there is plenty to work on and that a better performance will be needed in round 3 against Kilmainhamwood on Sunday 6th September at 11am in Castletown. As expected, this group will go down to the wire in round 3 to see who advances to the semi-final from the group along with Kilmainhamwood. 

Next up is our second team who are out in round 2 of their championship against Nobber next Saturday evening 29th August at 6pm in Kilmainham.
