Gaeil Colmcille 4-17 Simonstown 1-05

Gaeil Colmcille picked up their second win in as many games when they defeated Simonstown at Martry on a perfect evening for football. Amazingly four points in the group is not enough to see Kells advance with round 3 games still to play, in contrast to 2025 where two points was enough for Champions Summerhill to advance.

In a tense opening five minutes Simonstown got the opening score when Naill Kane got in behind the Kells backs to tip over. Gaeil Colmcille responded straight away from a free that Andrew Gormley struck over for two points and the Kells men never looked back from there on. Charlie Twomey was who was immense in the opening round win over Donaghmore/Ashbourne was brought in for a start in place of the injured Seamus Mattimoe and Twomey pointed for Kells third of the game.

Kells saw two goal chances go to waste with Twomey seeing two of his shots blocked out for 45s. Evan Sheridan added a point and Twomey followed up with his second of the game. Twomey had three to his name in the 14th minute with another brilliant point. Kane got his and Simonstown’s second point of the game but Barry Farrelly came up from the goals to strike over a two point free to see Kells lead 0-08 to 0-02.

There would be only two more scores in the half but they were big ones as a shot that dropped short was scooped by Andrew Gormley who laid off to Twomey and it was third time lucky for the 17 year old as he struck the back of the net and after picking up the Farrelly’s Bar Player of the Week in Round 1 he was favourite to add another €50 to the piggy bank. With the clock heading to injury time, John Gormley played a one-two with Fionn Smith and Gormley stormed through the defence and fired low beyond the Simonstown keeper and defender on the line to give Kells a 2-08 to 0-02 lead at the break.

Kells got the perfect start to the second half when Conor Óg Ferguson flicked the ball up and laid it off to Evan Sheridan who tore down on goal and struck low for Gaeil Colmcille’s third goal of the game. That would be Kells last score for near fifteen minutes as Simonstown hit two points in a row and a penalty that was converted by Goalkeeper Ben Hoey for his third penalty goal in this years championship.

Both sides traded points with Twomey added his fourth of the day. Andrew Gormley hot two frees in a row, one for two points and one for a single point before Kells all but sealed the game after quick hands left the hard working Liam Ferguson got his reward when he struck low for Gaeil Ciolmcille’s fourth goal.

Second half substitutes Harry Butler and Liam Barry pointed either side of Twomeys fifth point to leave his tally for 1-05 on the day and there was still time for Kells fourth two pointer when Andrew Gormley sailed over a free to close out the win.
