Moynalvey got their Meade Farm Intermediate Football Championship back on track with an eight point win over Blackhall Gaels at Dunboyne on Saturday evening August 22nd.

Following their opening round defeat to Meath Hill, Moynalvey got their IFC campaign back on track with an eight point win over neighbours Blackhall Gaels at the well presented Dunboyne venue on Saturday evening.

The win sees Moynalvey leapfrog their opponents into second place in the Group C table after this local derby. 

Many of the players on both teams will be familiar with each other having lined out for independent side Jenkinstown Gaels at U-19 and Minor level over recent years.

It was the Kilcloon/Batterstown side who troubled the score keeper first with a Tom Powderly free in the second minute. Vinny Walsh opened the Moynalvey account in the 3rd minute, likewise from a free.

Moynalvey took the lead for the first time in the fourth minute when the O’Sullivan brothers Cillian and Hugh combined for their side’s second score, Cillian rounding his man on the end line before passing back out to younger brother Hugh to tap over, 0-2 to 0-1.

The game’s only goal came in the seventh minute when Tom Powderly latched onto a breaking ball in the Moynalvey goalmouth and fired to the top corner of Conor Egan’s net, now 1-1 to 0-2.

That Powderly goal put Moynalvey on the back foot for the first quarter with Moynalvey having to wait until the 21st minute to retake the lead. Moynalvey’s Adam Murphy traded a pair of points with a Liam Jennings free which was brought forward after Moynalvey didn’t retreat from a free further out the field and a point for his cousin Luke Jennings leaving it 1-3 to 0-4 midway through the half.

Points from Craig Gilsenan and Mark O’Sullivan had the sides level for a second time in the 19th minute, 1-3 to 0-6, before a sweetly struck ’45 from Adam Murphy put Barry O’Keeffe’s charges into the lead again, one they weren’t to relinquish from here on, 0-7 to 0-6 after twenty one minutes.

The O’Sullivan’s Mark and Cillian fired over a point each followed up by a brace from Vinny Walsh, the second of which was tapped over after a Cillian O’Sullivan effort at goal was saved in the build up, making it 0-11 to 1-3 with twenty eight minutes gone.

There was still time for another score with Blackhall wing back Niall Kelly splitting the uprights to leave the half time score board read 0-11 to 1-4 when referee Andrew Smith blew his half time whistle. But for extremely wayward shooting Moynalvey should have been out of site at half time.

Hugh O’Sullivan opened the second half scoring with a brace of points, the first fisted over from close range when perhaps a goal chance was on and the second a drive at goal parried over the crossbar by Blackhall Gaels’ goalkeeper Eoghan Kiernan. Padraic Harnan sent over the first of his two scores in the 41st minute leaving it double scores, 0-14 to 1-4.

Meath U-20 Liam Jennings sent over a two point free, with Moynalvey responding with points from Cillian O’Sullivan, Darren Brennan and substitutes Sean Duggan and David McLoughlin having immediate impacts firing over a point each to leave the score board read 0-18 to 1-6 with ten minutes remaining. 

A pair of Blackhall two pointers, the second another Jennings two point free leaving five between the sides with 54 minutes played.

Cillian O’Sullivan and Liam Jennings traded frees, O’Sullivan’s after David McLoughlin was fouled when attacking followed by three Moynalvey points from Barry Walsh, another Cillian O’Sullivan free after Adam Murphy was ankle tapped and Padraic Harnan rounded off the scoring to see Moynalvey pick up their first win on an eight point margin, 0-22 to 1-11.  

Twenty two points, seventeen from play and eleven different scorers all pleasing aspects, however almost the same tally of wides as scores will have Moynalvey proritising shooting at training over the next fortnight. 

Best for the winners here were Cillian O’Sullivan, Hugh O’Sullivan, Barry Walsh, Darren Brennan and Michael Brady.

Next up for Moynalvey in round three is another local derby in a repeat of last year’s quarter-final against Dunsany on Friday evening 4th September.
