Navan O’Mahony’s lost out to St Peters Dunboyne in the first round of the SFC, played in Dunboyne on Tuesday evening. It was an exciting and high-scoring encounter.

An early point from Ailbhe Leahy settled O’Mahony’s, along with scores from Muireann Nelson gave Collie O’Rourke’s charges a 0-05 to 0-03 lead. Six points separated the sides when Isabel Thorp sent the ball to the net.

O’Mahony’s were unfortunate not to extend the lead when Orlaith Mallon was denied by the crossbar. A late goal from the hosts in the first half reduced the gap to two points before Lauren Woods kicked a good score to leave three in it at the interval.

St Peters Dunboyne 1-06

St Peter’s drew the sides level with a goal quickly in the first half. O’Mahony’s responded well, with a great team move ending with Leahy finding the net to restore her side’s advantage.

Two goals and a two-pointer in quick succession for St Peters left O’Mahony’s chasing the game for the first time. Some great scores from Holly McKeigue and Charlie Murray reduced the gap to three and O’Mahony’s needed a goal in the final stages.

In spite of their best efforts, it wasn’t to be for O’Mahony’s on the day, with Dunboyne kicking the final score of the match to give themselves some breathing space. Overall, it was a positive performance with plenty to build on and learn from ahead of Oldcastle at home in two weeks time.
