A very exciting opening round to the Meath football championship concluded on Sunday evening at a wet Simonstown.

Sunday: The curtain came down on a very exciting opening round of the football championship with the meeting of Meath Hill and Moynalvey in the IFC. The 2024 Mattie McDonnell Cup winners made a winning start but an injury to Gary Breslin will be a major concern for Paudie Finnegan’s men. Oldcastle scored four goals and opened their Group C account with a win over last year’s finalists Castletown. It was a memorable day for last year’s JFC winners Clann na nGael as they overcame Drumbaragh with ease at Martry. Goals were also crucial for Walterstown in their win over St. Michaels. Elsewhere Duleek Bellewstown had eight to spare over a depleted Ballivor while there were also wins for St. Pats and Longwood.
In the junior championship Ballinlough proved too strong for 2025 Junior B winners St. Mary's. Goals from the Shine’s brothers Tom and Daire gave the North Meath outfit a 2-12 to 0-2 interval lead. Nobber staged a second half fightback and claimed both points against Moylagh at Carnaross. The winners were 1-9 to 1-3 in arrears at the break. It was honours even in the battle of the big two for the Peter McDermott Cup at Ashbourne. Diarmuid Moriarty earned Curraha a share of the spoils with a last minute point.

Saturday: Dunshaughlin laid down a marker in their opening round win over Simonstown. Aaron Murphy kicked 12 points as Richie Kealy’s men put in a very impressive display. Both of Simonstown’s goals came from keeper Ben Hoey from the penalty spot. St. Colmcilles had a goal to spare over Seneschalstown at Donore. The Cilles led 1-10 to 1-8 at the break. A pointed free from Andrew Gormley in injury was enough to earn Gaeil Colmcille a minimum win at Walterstown. The Kellsmen led 0-7 to 0-5 at half time. Over in the home of the Keegan Cup holders Trim had 7 to spare over Na Fianna. The Town side were 0-9 to 0-5 in front at the break.
One of the favourites for the Junior, Slane, held on to win by two against Syddan. Sydann were 2-6 to 0-8 in front at the break while St. Ultans and Carnaross upset the form book in Moylagh and Devenish Park.

Friday: In a repeat of last year’s SFC semi final Rataoth were too strong for Skryne. Joey Wallace, Daithi McGowan and 2 for Bryan McMahon with the winners goals who led 2-10 to 0-7 at the break. Over in Dunganny a point separated Wolfe Tones and Ballinabrackey, 0-8 nto 0-7, at the break but Shane McCoy’s men pulled clear in the second half to record a comfortable win.
Moynalty needed a late pointed free from Paddy Byrne to earn a share of the spoils against Kilmainham in the Junior B championship. In Meath Hill Kilmainhamwood had three points to spare over Drumconrath at Meath. The teams were level 1-4 to 0-7 at the break

Thursday: After a sluggish first half Keegan Cup holders and recent Division 1 FL winners Summerhill came good in the second half to see off Kilbride at Dunganny. The IFC champions led 1-7 to 0-5 at the break.
Over in Dunsany St. Peters Charlie Gallagher kicked a late two pointer to earn a share of the spoils against Rathkenny. Joey Farrelly’s men led 1-6 to 1-4 at the break.
In the Junior B Cortown recorded another big opening round win over Eastern Gaels while Clonard and Boardsmill shared the spoils in Longwood.
