Ballinlough 1-09 Moynalty 5-19
An understrength Ballinlough side were on the receiving end of a heavy defeat as visitors Moynalty ran riot in their final Division 4 league game in Ballinlough on Sunday morning.
The victory sees Moynalty climb above Ballinlough into sixth place in the final league standings, a satisfying finish after a difficult mid-season period in which a lengthy injury list contributed to three consecutive defeats. Attention now turns to the championship, with both clubs hoping to be competing at the business end of their respective championships.
Moynalty made a blistering start, with goals from Paul Lynch and Podge O'Connor inside the opening five minutes, before points from O'Connor and Paddy Byrne extended their early advantage. Playing with the aid of a strong wind, Ballinlough responded with a two-point score before adding another excellent point from a difficult angle. However, Moynalty continued to dominate. Niall O'Connor struck for a fourth goal to leave the home side in serious trouble. Ballinlough rallied and found the net themselves after referee Seamus O'Connor penalised Moynalty defender Nicholas McKenna for receiving a kick-out inside the two-point arc. Ballinlough reacted quickly from the resulting free, creating a one-on-one opportunity that was coolly finished past Johnny Lynch.
Moynalty responded in impressive fashion, with points from Jack Kavanagh, Paddy Byrne, Ronan Lynch and Podge O'Connor ensuring they took a commanding lead into the break.
Half-Time: Ballinlough 1-06 Moynalty 4-07
With the game firmly under control, Moynalty made several half-time changes and, now playing with the advantage of the strong wind, quickly resumed where they had left off. Paddy Byrne added two more points, while Cian Lynch, Eoin Gilsenan and David Daly also got on the scoresheet.
To their credit, Ballinlough continued to battle throughout the second half. They produced several timely blocks in defence, while their goalkeeper made a number of excellent saves to prevent the margin from becoming even greater.
The hosts added two more points from play, but Moynalty continued to create scoring opportunities with ease. Further substitutions failed to disrupt their momentum, and late points from Paddy Byrne and James Lynch rounded off an emphatic victory for the visitors.
