Kilmainhamwood 2-10 Blackhall Gaels/Kilbride 1-9

Kilmainhamwood were crowned Meath Minor Football League Division 5 champions after this late comeback against Blackhall Gaels/Kilbride in perfect conditions at Sean Newman Park.

The sides were level 0-3 apiece at the end of a poor opening half. Lining out without county minor, Milo Stafford, the ‘Wood’ were on the scoreboard first through Matthew Vaughan. The combination side kicked three wides and saw a penalty crash off the upright before they opened their account courtesy of Cillian McIvor. Kevin Tighe put Blackhall/Kilbride in front before the influential Cillian Burns kicked his first score and the teams went to the water break level. Burns and Jack Lynch exchanged points in the second quarter before the half time whistle.

The game came to life in the second half. Jack Drumgoole and Tighe put the combination side in front. The ‘Wood’ dominated for the next ten minutes and were rewarded with a brilliant Burns goal and a Kieran Conlon brace. Blackhall/Kilbride hit back. Pierse Hayes raised a green flag and Killian McGivern pointed to give them a 1-6 to 1-5 lead. Burns restored Kilmainhamwood’s lead with a monster two pointer but by then the combination side were dominating. Tighe, McGivern and Conor Walsh sent over fine points and with five minutes remaining they looked good for the win.

Kilmainhamwood had other ideas. Vaughan got them rolling again with a point. Burns put them in front with his second two pointer and set up Alex Kiernan for his team’s second goal just before the full time whistle.

After the game Joe O’Brien presented the Division 5 FL cup to Kieran Conlon.
