Moynalvey picked up their first win of the Husqvarna Centre PR Coyne Div. 1 football league in the final round with a five point win over Dunshaughlin at Kilmore Park Moynalvey on Saturday evening 11th July.
Moynalvey 4-9
Dunshaughlin 1-13
Although coming close to picking up a win on a couple of occasions throughout the league, the final round wasn’t a bad time to pick up your first win meaning Moynalvey moved themselves out of the automatic relegation spot and into a relegation play-off against Skryne to give themselves a fighting chance of survival.
The foundations for this win were laid in the first half when Moynalvey found the Dunshaughlin net four times giving the home side a seven point half time lead.
Moynalvey should have been first to open the scoring with Dunshaughlin ‘keeper Tim O’Sullivan saving a goal attempt from Cillian O’Sullivan, but it was Dunshaughlin who had 1-2 on the score board before Moynalvey opened their account. Dunshaughlin’s early points from Matthew Costello and Adam Hanley with the goal coming from Tadgh O’Dushlaine.
Moynalvey opened their account in the ninth minute through Hugh O’Sullivan, followed by a Vinny Walsh free, another for Hugh O’Sullivan and the first of Moynalvey’s four goals coming from Darren Brennan for Moynalvey to take the lead, 1-3 to 1-2 with nineteen minutes played.
Richie Kealy’s side regained the lead momentarily with a two point free from Aaron Murphy, but Dunshaughlin were then hit with a three goal Moynalvey blitz within ninety seconds. The first a close range finish from Padraic Harnan after Darren Brennan had floated a pass into him, the second Cillian O’Sullivan sent through a neat pass to Vinny Walsh who turned and lobbed Tim O’Sullivan in the Dunshaughlin goals; and the third goal coming from the other Walsh brother Barry to give Moynalvey an eight point lead after twenty six minutes, 4-3 to 1-4.
Dunshaughlin tagged on a point from Ronan Geraghty to leave the half time score board read 4-3 to 1-5 when referee Bernard Heaney blew for half time.
Whatever the Dunshaughlin management said to their side at half time had the desired effect as they sent over five of the six opening scores of the second half. Aaron Murphy sent over his second two pointer of the evening, this one from play within sixty seconds of the restart. Moynalvey countered the Murphy two pointer with a Craig Gilsenan point. Points from Dunshaughlin’s Matthew Costello (2), Aaron Murphy and Adam Hanley had the margin between the sides back to two points eleven minutes into the second half, 4-4 to 1-11.
A brace of Cillian O’Sullivan points, one from play and the other a free were countered by the black and amber side with a Tadhg O’Dushlaine point. Darren Brennan pointed for the home side leaving four between the sides with seven minutes remaining.
Conor Duke pointed the visitors final point from a free in the 24th minute, with Moynalvey going on to add another pair of points through a Cillian O’Sullivan free and substitute James Kelly to leave five between the sides at the full time whistle, 4-9 to 1-13 and Moynalvey picking up their first win of the campaign.
Plenty of fine individual performances on the Moynalvey side especially in defence, but Moynalvey’s standout performers were Padraic Harnan, Hugh O’Sullivan and the excellent Barry Walsh.
