Kilmainham 1-14, Drumconrath 1-13
Kilmainham wrapped up their Division 11 league campaign on Thursday 9th July 2026. The lads welcomed Drumconrath to Kilmainham on a glorious evening for football. We were down to the bare bones of a team for this one with holidays and because our first team are out tomorrow night. Even the management team was unavailable! Great credit must go to our management team led by Mickey Newman and all the players to fulfill all 9 fixtures. A fantastic achievement for such a small club. The lads had some great performances in this league with some big wins and finished in 6th place in the table with 10 points!
Drumconrath started off at a blistering pace, scoring a goal after 2 minutes. They followed this up with another 3 points. They were pushing for goals. Some last ditch defending and good goalkeeping by veteran Trevor Lynch between the posts keeping them out. Kilmainham's first score came from halfback Matthew Mullen after a well-worked move. Andy Arkins then popped over a nice point. Drumconrath hit back with another 2 points. Matthew Mullen responded with his second point of the match. Kilmainham were beginning to get to grips with Drumconrath’s goal threat, however they did manage the next 2 points. Richie Brady scored a nice point and Paddy Hennigan split the posts to reduce the gap to 5 points at half-time. Drumconrath will rue some missed opportunities to have been further ahead.
Half-time score: Kilmainham 0-5, Drumconrath 1-7
Kilmainham regrouped at half-time and were looking to reduce the deficit, unfortunately it was Drumconrath who scored the first point to push out their lead to 6 points. Sustitute Scott Lynch then popped over his first point. Matthew Mullen hit his third of the match. We were back to 4 points. Drumconrath scored a nice point from play before Lynch popped over a free. A long ball into the Drumconrath defence was brilliantly flicked to their net by half back Dean Peppard. A lovely well-timed run and finish. Peppard was like a fish out of water all game, plucking kick outs for fun! Drumconrath replied. The match was end to end at this stage. Scott Lynch then landed a monster 2 pointer! Drumconrath were unlucky not to have another goal or two. Some great defending by stalwart Tom Monaghan who used all his experience to stop a certain goal. Drumconrath did however get two points from these attacks. They were 2 points ahead with 7 minutes left. Midfielder Shane Butler composed himself to send over a lovely team point after a pass from the duracell bunny Matthew Mullen. Scott Lynch scored to
level it. 1 minute left. Kilmainham won the kick out and the ball was cleverly worked to Lynch who fired over his 7th point of the match to seal a brilliant win for us.
It was brilliant to see the return of Joe Mahon and Matty Mulroe to the Kilmainham colours and we had a debut for Christo Bello. Christo’s first ever gaelic football match. All 3 lads helped us get over the line, with some noting that taking Brian Black off for Christo was the winning of the match!! Overall, this was a brilliant team performance, full of work rate, a positive attitude and a willingness to keep going for 60 minutes. The lads have 3 championship matches coming up in August and September with their first match against the same opposition Drumconrath on Saturday 15th August at 6pm in Drumconrath.
Next up tonight, our first team will look to get the win against Donaghmore Ashbourne to secure our division 3 status. Throw in time is 8pm, tonight Friday 10th July. Let’s get out and support the lads!
