FL Div 3:  Hoey on form for Kilmainham in Dunderry

June 18, 2026

Kilmainham's Michael Hoey

Dunderry 1-14, Kilmainham 1-15

We travelled to Junior A side and promotion hopefuls Dunderry for this round 9 tie on Tuesday 16th June 2026. Dunderry were fighting for the top places while we were battling at the wrong end of a highly competitive league. Kilmainham had beaten Dunderry in the league and had drawn with them in the championship last and they went to Dunderry full of belief that they could upset the odds and get a result.

In a cagey opening both teams were guilty of some bad wides and balls that dropped short. Dunderry missed two and we dropped one short before Ger Morgan got our first score from play after 3 minutes. Dunderry they hit two from play. We then hit a few bad wides after some great build up play. Dunderry then hit another point on 13 minutes. Michael Hoey and Declan Mullen then scored two very good points. Two from play to level the match after 16 minutes. Dunderry then hit a mini purple patch, kicking 4 very well worked team scores to open up a bit of a cushion on 28 minutes. Mickey Newman kicked a good score from play off his left boot to reduce the gap to 3 points as we approached half time. This was a very competitive match with every ball contested for as if it was the last.

Half-time score: Dunderry 0-7, Kilmainham 0-4.

Half-time saw the introduction of our midfielder Larry Morgan, who was back after an injury lay off. A brilliant long ball into the full-forward line by Mickey Newman was caught superbly by Larry, he off loaded to his cousin Ger who rattled the Dunderry net with a brilliant finish. Just the start that we needed. Dunderry were rattled. They missed two chances before Michael Hoey hit a free on 4 minutes. He then hit a sublime 2 pointer from play. Dunderry were not going away. They scored two very good points from play of their own on 7 and 9 minutes. The game was a battle zone with every ball fought for by both sides. Michael Hoey then slotted over another free on 12 minutes, before he clipped a brilliant 2 pointer off the ground from a free. A score to be admired. Dunderry replied with two free’s and a point from play. It was end to end at this stage. Michael Hoey then landed another monster 2 pointer from a free. Dunderry replied with a good point from play to leave 2 points in the match in Kilmainham’s favour with 3 minutes to go. Then came what looked to be the winning score. A point attempt from Dunderry dropped short and was gathered and off loaded to their number 7 who buried the ball to the back of the Kilmainham net. Dunderry were up by 1 point with 29 minutes gone. Kilmainmham refused to let their heads drop and kept coming back. Larry Morgan was starting to influence the match around the middle. The referee had signalled 3 minutes of additional time. Dylan Morgan fed Andy Arkins who had a goal bound attempt that was brilliantly blocked by a Dunderry defender and went out for 45. Michael Hoey converted again from distance to level the match with 32 minutes gone. A brilliant fetch by Larry Morgan from the Dunderry kick out,

resulted in Dunderry foul and Kilmainham free. Larry decided to tap and go, he hand passed the ball to Harry Newman who then wisely off loaded to Dylan Morgan. Morgan steadied himself to kick the point off his left boot for the winner. The referee allowed the kick out and blew for full-time with time up, much to the relief of the Kilmainham supporters. This was an enjoyable game of football that could have went either way. Our lads can be happy with their overall team performance. They showed tremendous character and heart to keep plugging away and to get the win. Mickey Newman and his management team will be delighted with this win. When we needed leaders, we had them all over the field. A special mention to Michael Hoey who showed in this match why he was in with the Meath u20’s. He gave an exhibition in kicking and work rate, and he was well supported by his teammates in a much needed league win.
