Moynalvey and Donaghmore/Ashbourne proved inseparable in this round nine tie of the Husqvarna Centre PR Coyne Div. 1 football league played at Kilmore Park Moynalvey on Tuesday evening 16th June.
Moynalvey 2-16
Donaghmore/Ashbourne 3-13
With both sides lingering in and around the relegation zone, a win for either side would have been beneficial for either side’s survival hopes, in the end it was all square when referee Robbie Barrett blew his full time whistle, the result meaning Moynalvey remain propping up the base of the Div. 1 table on three points, while Donaghmore/Ashbourne sit three places above on five points.
Moynalvey were quickest out of the blocks here with a fisted effort from Darren Brennan opening the scoring in the second minute followed by a Hugh O’Sullivan point, 0-2 to 0-0 after five minutes.
The lively Stephen Carton who was a constant thorn in the Moynalvey defence opened Donaghmore/Ashbourne’s account with 1-1 in the seventh and tenth minutes to give the visitors the advantage for the first time, 1-1 to 0-2.
An Adam Murphy free reduced the deficit to the minimum, but then the Moors hit a trio of points without reply, a brace from Stephen Carton and a point from full forward Andrew Tormey to give the town side a 1-4 to 0-3 lead with nineteen minutes played.
Padraic Harnan scored the first of his side’s four two pointers when lofting over with the left peg leaving two between the sides, 1-4 to 0-5, with ten minutes of the half remaining.
Donaghmore/Ashbourne then reeled off five points without response to extend their advantage to seven points, 1-9 to 0-5 with two minutes of the half remaining. There was still time for the Walsh brothers Barry and Vinny to add a pair of points for Moynalvey to leave the half time score board read 1-9 to 0-7.
Donaghmore/Ashbourne’s advantage was extended to eight points when that menace Carton hit another 1-1, the point six minutes after the restart and the goal following a Barry Walsh effort for Moynalvey leaving it double scores, 2-10 to 0-8, nine minutes into the second half.
Moynalvey then found another gear completing a ten point turnaround, turning that eight point deficit into a two point advantage to lead by two with two minutes remaining. The revival kick started by an excellent Conor Quinn two pointer in the 42nd minute. Sixty seconds later a Vinny Walsh effort at goal was blocked only for the rebound to fall to Padraic Harnan who made no mistake rifling to the top corner of Andrew Colgan’s net leaving just a goal between the sides, 2-10 to 1-10.
Donaghmore/Ashbourne responded to Harnan’s goal with a point, but Adam Murphy struck for Moynalvey’s second goal in the 45th minute leaving just one between the sides, 2-11 to 2-10. The comeback was complete when Padraic Harnan sent over his second two pointer of the evening, this time curled in off the right foot to give Moynalvey the lead for the first time since the opening minutes, 2-12 to 2-11.
An Ashbourne point drew the sides level for the first time, before points from an Adam Murphy free in front of the posts after indiscipline from the Ashbourne players, followed by a second of the evening for Hugh O’Sullivan meant Moynalvey held a two point lead with two minutes remaining, 2-14 to 2-12.
Donaghmore/Ashbourne then hit Moynalvey for a third goal and looked like they were taking the two points on offer back home to Ashbourne. But, there was still time for more drama, a two point free from Adam Murphy looked set to give Moynalvey their first win of the campaign, but agonizingly deep in injury time to Donaghmore/Ashbourne’s credit they dug out the equalizing point meaning the sides finished level, 2-16 to 3-13 when the full time whistle blew.
Best for Moynalvey here were the excellent Michael Brady, Padraic Harnan, Darren Brennan and Adam Murphy.
A third draw for Moynalvey and yet to pick up a win, next up for the men in maroon is a round ten trip to Skryne on Saturday 27th June.
