Kildalkey 2-16 Trim 2-15
For 40 minutes of this Round 6 Division 1HL game in Trim the hosts were heading for a comfortable win looking hungry sharp first to the ball and dominating Kildalkey all over the pitch but the Blues produced a stunning last 20 minutes to take the points and give their supporters something to cheer about and left Trim scratching their heads as to how they lost this game.
Playing with the strong wind into the town goals Trim hit the ground running and looked very sharp as the village side just couldn’t get a foothold in the game as the men in red dominated nearly every line and looked far hungrier leading at the break by 2-11 to 0-4
The goals coming from Mikey Cole and James Murray and they were hitting points from all over the field but also were guilty of 9 wides they were left to rue
Kildalkey only managed 4 points 2 frees and 2 from play from Nicky Potterton and headed for the dressing room at the break very downbeat.
Kildalkey now had the wind behind them in the second half and while it was going to be a help huge improvement was needed to make any sort of comeback.
Niall McNally sent over their first point with a free from his own half back line and Nicky Potterton scored a free but Trim hit back with a James Murray free and a point from George Douglas and still looked comfortable.
Evan Fitzgerald Potterton (2frees) and Paddy Conneely clipped over points and brought their tally to 0-10 and suddenly they started to win a few breaks around the middle third.
The hard working Luke Rickard seemed to win every ball that came his way and Niall McNally Jamie kavanagh Kevin McKeon and Evan Fitzgerald started to get on top of their markers as they fought hard for every ball and supporters and players started to believe.
Paddy Potterton slotted over to bring their tally to 0-13 with a nice point.
Conor Fitzgerald slipped a pass to Coneely who was causing problems when moved inside and scored a goal to put 4 in it Trim scored 2 points from James Murray to bring their total to 2-15 but Kildalkey had all the momentum now and Coneely hit another point as the game moved up a notch and then he gathered possession around 40 yards out offloaded to Potterton who went on a solo run and unleashed a bullet for a wonder goal one of the best your likely to see to put a point in it with time ticking down
Potterton again gathered possession from the next puckout on the dressing room side and off his left from way out scored the equaliser a brilliant effort.
With time almost up Kildalkey who were winning every puckout now got possession and were fouled Potterton stood over it and nailed the winner from over 70 yards to give his team the lead for the first time soon after Derek Ryan blew for full time as Kildalkey coming from 13 points down at halftime won this game that had more twists and turns than a good movie.
It’s significant that both teams only managed 4 points playing against the wind.
While Kildalkey management won’t be happy with the first 40 minutes performance they must be really happy with the way they battled for the last 20 where they put their bodies on the line and fought for every ball.
When these 2 sides met earlier in the year in the Brendan Davis Cup semi final Kildalkey won it by a point as well in a thriller a late Nicky Potterton point also.
With the championship only around the corner both sets of supporters will look forward to a third meeting this year between these great rivals who always bring out the best in each other.
