Seneschalstown 2-20 Oldcastle 0-12

Seneschalstown produced their best performance of 2026 thus far to dispatch of Oldcastle by fourteen points on Saturday evening in Fr. Tully Park. It was a damp evening on the banks of the Boyne but there was little wind to speak of as Seneschalstown were looking to add a home victory to their recent successes against Ballinabrackey and St. Patricks, both of which were on the road.

Barring a 60 second spell in the opening half when Oldcastle drew level at 0-04 apiece, Seneschalstown lead from pillar to post having taken the lead through a Cian Commons point after 40 seconds and were still adding to their tally right up until the final kick of the game when Donie Commons put the ball in the Oldcastle net.

Commons added to his opening score two minutes later when he converted a free after a foul on Eoin Finnegan before the visitors, managed by the former Seneschalstown great Joe Sheridan, got their opening point from a free in the fourth minute.

The opening quarter was keenly contested as the sides went score for score. Commons tagged on his third point from a free just inside the arc after a 50 metre advancement which Oldcastle replied to before a foul on Collie Scanlon allowed Commons kick his and Seneschalstown’s fourth of the game.

Oldcastle were awarded a free on the edge of the two point arc over to the right hand side which was kicked between the posts for a fine score in the thirteenth minute, but that was the only time the sides were level in the duration of the game. The parity lasted less than a minute as Brian Maguire made a run through the centre of the Oldcastle defence before being picked out by Commons and the wing back chipped over to restore Seneschalstown’s lead.

Five minutes later this was added to by Sean Reilly, operating further up the pitch at wing forward and he hoisted over a rare score. The North Meath side reduced the arrears to the minimum in the 23rd minute but from there to half time, Seneschalstown kicked on.

Firstly Eoin Finnegan kicked a close range free before some quick thinking from the corner forward spotted Niall Hickey making a smart run and the Seneschalstown number six clipped over from a narrow angle.

In the 28th minute a swift attack from Seneschalstown ended with the ball in the hands of Eoin Finnegan but having had a knack of finding the net in previous games, he saw his shot rattle off the crossbar. Cian Hosie picked up the loose ball and set up his namesake Commons to make space and score.

The final score of the half came from a turnover and a swift counter attack with a goal looking on at one stage. The attack slowed briefly but Alan Mulvany was on hand to pop the ball over to ensure Seneschalstown lead by double scores at the break, 0-10 to 0-05.

Seneschalstown started the second half as they ended the first as Dylan Keating curled over a minute after play resumed.

There was a reply from Oldcastle in the 33rd minute before Seneschalstown got their first goal in the 39th minute.

A long ball from defence broke into the hands of Dylan Keating inside and he fed Alan Mulvany off his shoulder and the wing forward made no mistake when in on goal, firing to the bottom left hand corner. Two minutes later the same player added a point as he finished off a fine team move with a point from the right of centre which started all the way from David Gordon between the sticks when a ball dropped short into his goalmouth as Seneschalstown now had a nine point advantage.

Oldcastle did enjoy a spell in the ascendency as they outscored their hosts 0-06 to 0-01 in a nine minute period to reduce the deficit to four points with Donie Commons, who by this stage had relocated to full forward won a long ball in and put his name on the scoresheet. With nine minutes of time remaining Seneschalstown were 1-13 to 0-12 ahead.

The home side though, regathered themselves and the momentum for the final ten minutes. Eoin Finnegan settled his side with a point from an advanced mark.

Two minutes later, Woodley Nicholson was fouled outside the arc and Cian Commons put his free high up into the sky. The wind caught hold of it and after an age it landed between posts necessitating the umpire to raise the orange flag. The umpire didn’t have the flag back down too long before he was waving it again as from the next attack Eoin Finnegan kicked a score from outside the arc on the other side and Seneschalstown were well on their way to victory.

Finnegan added a free to the tally before Alan Mulvany brought up the 20 point total for the home side after a kickout from David Gordon bounced all the way through to him on the wet ground.

There was still time for Seneschalstown to find another goal with the very last play of the game as Ryan Finnegan sent a sideline ball into Donie Commons and he was able to hold off his man to pull on the ball first time after it wasn’t gathered cleanly and it rounded off a fine performance for Seneschalstown.

The win moves Seneschalstown into joint third position with Saturday’s opponents and St. Patrick’s as the table gets tighter up around the top. Next up for Seneschalstown is Meath Hill on June 16th.
