Ballinlough's Brandon Brunton

Ballinlough 3-00-16 (25) Skryne 0-01-06 (8)

Ballinlough made the early morning trip to a wet and wild Skryne for Round 8 of the Division 4 League, with the heavens deciding to open just before throw-in to make conditions tricky.

The visitors had a couple of early chances go wide of the posts before Tom Shine made one stick in the third minute following great work from Charlie Lynch and Mark McCullen.

A point for Skryne was awarded in the fifth minute despite the ball looking like it tailed off wide, but with no Seamus McGee in attendance this morning, Ballinlough were a man down on the sticks and the score stood!

Good combination play from Brandon Brunton and Conor Fleming set Daire Shine up for his first point in the sixth minute, before Shine added a second two minutes later from a free.

Skryne hit back with a point from play in the 13th minute, but they were to be reduced down to 14 men when their wing back recieved a black card for a pull of the leg in the 15th minute.

Ballinlough made hay in those ten minutes with the extra man as Daire Shine added two further frees by the 20th minute before great play from Joshua Lynch to find the space and play the perfect pass into Brandon Brunton, saw Brunton turn his man and fire over in the 22nd minute.

Ballinlough completed their rout in this period with a well taken goal as Eoin Briody collected the ball in midfield, before laying it off to Tom Shine, and he in turn returned the ball in the direction of Briody, who used his steps and solos to good effect before hitting the ball to the back of the net in the 23rd minute.

With Skryne soon restored to their original 15, it wasn’t long before they worked the scoreboard with a point from play in the 27th minute, but Ballinlough responded very well when Daire Shine fielded the ball expertly in the middle of the field before shifting it to Eoin Briody who showed quick hands between himself and Tom Shine before the ball was returned to Daire Shine and he made no mistake off his left foot hitting the back of the net to extend Ballinlough’s lead.

Two Skryne frees in quick succesion lowered the deficit but Jack Connell ensured there would be eight between the sides at half time as he added a point in the 31st minute.

So when Referee Robbie Barrett blew the half time whistle Ballinlough led on a scoreline of 2-07 to Skrynes 0-05.

With the start of the second half Ballinlough started where they left off and Daire Shine got his second goal of the morning when he showed some extreme ingenuity, as Jack Connell intervened a loose Skryne kick-out and played it onto Shine, and he maneuvered the ball masterfully, flicking it over one Skryne man’s head before flicking the bouncing ball past another and then poking the ball beyond the Skryne keeper in the 34th minute.

Shine followed that score up with a point from play off his left foot before Eoin Briody added a point to his earlier goal in the 36th minute to leave Ballinlough leading by 13 points.

Skryne were to be punished further in the 42nd minute when an off the ball incident was spotted by Referee Robbie Barrett and when the ball went dead he made his way back to black card the Skryne centre back for a needless hit on Ballinlough’s Charlie Lynch.

Initially the reduction of numbers didn’t impact Skryne as they hit a two point free in the 45th minute to give themselves some hope but Ballinlough were not allowing them to breathe in this game and superb squeezing and defensive work from substitutes Seanie Geraghty and Conor Rennicks, saw the ball overturned and the inform Daire Shine tapped over in the 46th minute.

A Skryne point from play in the 47th minute was all they could muster as Ballinlough found another gear and added points from Tom Shine, Daire Shine, Eoin Briody, and Oisin McDermott before the black card time was over.

Even with the teams level numerically again Ballinlough finished the stronger of the two with Tom Shine and Luke Harte adding on late points to ensure Ballinlough took home an emphatic victory on a scoreline of 3-16 to Skrynes 0-08 when Referee Robbie Barrett blew the full-time whistle.
