Drumconrath 2-08 Gaeil Colmcille 2nds 4-12
Gaeil Colmcille 2nds continued their good form in Division 5 of the A Leagues with a ten point win over Drumconrath away on Tuesday evening. First half goals from Eoghan Flynn and Seamus Hannon was followed by second half goals by Harry Butler and Zak "Ziggy" Griffin to give Kells their seventh win in as many games.
It was the home side that got off to the better start and a goal in the opening two minutes was the games first score after Kells failed to clear their lines and gifted Drumconrath the perfect start. Charlie Twomey, fresh from his two points for the first's on Thursday evening got Gaeil Colmcille's opening score from the right boot of the 17 year old. Drumconrath retained their three point lead with a 14 yard free in the 8th minute.
Gaeil Colmcille were on level terms in the 10th minute after a brilliant run from wing back saw Eoghan Flynn gather the ball and fire low beyond the helpless Drumconrath keeper. Two more 14 yard frees from Drumconrath saw them go two points clear but Twomey struck again to cut the deficit to the minimum. Two points in quick succession from both corner forwards Keelan Sheridan and Harry Butler saw Kells take the lead for the first time.
The turning point of the game came in the 20th minute with Gaeil Colmcille's second goal which saw Ahmed Lawal overturn the Drumconrath attack, Kilian Kelly came out with the ball and played a line ball to Sean Cleary who offloaded to Cormac Ferguson, Ferguson laid the ball off to Seamus Hannon and with a string of first time passes to Twomey, Twomey to Ryan Farnham and Farnham got the ball back into Hannon's hands who drove the ball to the top corner of the net to see Kells lead by four and take a firm grip of the game.
Brian Hanlon's left footed effort saw Kells push five clear before The Gaeils discipline allowed Drumconrath another two tap over 14 yard frees to see them trail 1-05 to Kells 2-05 at the break.
In the second half it was Gaeil Colmcille that grabbed the first score and like Drumconrath in the first half it was a goal after a super ball from half time substitute Daniel Farrelly picked out Harry Butler with a wonderful pass and Butler spun the defender and finished low for Kells third goal. Once again it was a 14 yard free for Drumconrath that kept their scoreboard ticking but two points in a row from Butler and a third point from Twomey plus two more points from Hanlon saw the gap grow to 10 points with 10 minutes remaining.
Drumconrath added another free before Keelan Sheridan grabbed his second score of the game. Gary McGovern cam on as a substitute and pointed straight away. Drumconrath never laid down and got their reward in the 59th minute with their second goal in which Cormac Mattimoe couldn't do anything about. There was still time for a fourth goal for Kells, again Seamus Hannon was involved with Daniel Farrelly once again the provider who slipped Zak Griffin through on goal and Griffin composed himself and finished low to the near post to all but seal the win for Kells and cap off another good performance by Benny Reddy's men.
