Kilmessan 0-19 Navan O’Mahony’s 1-13
Kilmessan were crowned Meath Under 16 Division 1 Hurling League champions with three points to spare over Navan O’Mahony’s in perfect conditions at Fr. Plunkett Park Kildalkey. PHOTOS
Cillian Fitzsimmons got the scoreboard working for last years Under 15 league and championship winners. Kilmessan were in front 0-3 to 0-2 after ten minutes with points from the outstanding Micheál Moran and the very accurate Jamie O’Brien. The eventual winners were 0-5 to 0-4 in front before O’Mahony’s midfielder Ruairi McDermott finished to the net after a goalmouth scramble. Kilmessan recovered and a brace each from Moran, O’Brien and Luke Reynolds Donnelly gave them a 0-12 to 1-8 interval lead.
Fitzsimmons tied the game up in the opening minute of the second half and the sides were still level 0-15 to 1-12 at the second water break. Kilmessan made the push for home after that break with two brilliant efforts from O’Brien and one from Keelan Power. The town side needed a goal but some outstanding defending from the Kilmessan rearguard in the closing minutes thwarted their efforts and the early season silverware was heading their way.
After the game Michael Bird presented the cup to captain Jamie O’Brien to the delight of their large following.
