St Colmcilles 1-15 Gaeil Colmcille 1-16
After the opening round defeat to Ratoath, Manager Conn Cleary along with the Kells players and supporters would have chopped your hand off for how the next five games turned out as Gaeil Colmcille picked up a fifth win in a row on the road in the East Coast’s St. Colmcille’s.
Kells had mainly their fast start for the win as the home side let The Gaeils off the hook on many of occasions throughout. A lightening start from Gaeil Colmcille saw them lead 1-04 to 0-00 with only three minutes played. First up, Seamus Mattimoe struck a wonderful two pointer and that was followed by an equally impressive two pointer from Aaron Browne, Mattimoe turned provider then when he laid the ball off to the onrushing John Gormley who composed himself in front of goal and dispatch low to the bottom corner for the rapid start.
St. Colmcille’s got their first point of the game but that was cancelled out by an Andrew Gormley free to keep Kells lead at seven points with 9 minutes played. That would be the last score for the visitors for 17 minutes as St. Colmcille’s clawed their way back into game and found themselves level at 1-05 to 0-08 with 25 minutes played.
Gaeil Colmcille needed Liam Barry to slot over their third two pointer of the half to regain the lead as the half drew to a close. An Andrew Gormley 45 was followed by a14 yard frees by St. Colmcille’s which was the last of the half leading Kells ahead 1-08 to 0-09 at the interval.
St. Colmcille's came out in the second half with intent and we're awarded a free straight away that closed the gap to one point. The Cille's took the lead for the first time three minutes later after a turnover from the St. Colmcille's backs saw them carry the ball the length of the field and fire past Barry Farrelly in the Kells nets. St. Colmcille's led by three soon after and it was hard to see Kells slowing St. Colmcille's up. The free taking of Andrew Gormley got Kells back level with a one pointer and a two pointer to see the sides level at 1-11 a piece.
A dropped short shot from Arron Browne was scooped up by Seamus Mattimoe and Mattimoe put Kells back in the lead once again. From the resulting kickout, Gaeil Colmcille were awarded a free that Gormley popped over and the lead was doubled with 44 minutes played. Both sides traded points with Conor Óg Ferguson pointing for the Kells men and second half substitute Ryan Farnham pointed to see Kells lead by 10 with just over ten minutes remaining.
Gaeil Colmcille were reduced to 14 minutes after Adam Donnelly saw black and credit to St. Colmcille's they continued to dig deep and three points in a row saw the sides level with time almost up. There was still time for late drama and a missed place pass across the St. Colmcille's full back line with latched on by Andrew Gormley who was whipped down and he stepped up to get Kells winning score and the two points on offer in a game that could have went either way.
