Moynalvey ladies second team claimed Div. 8 league honours with a twelve point victory over Curraha/St.Vincents at a wet and cold Ardcath on Sunday evening 17th May.
Curraha / St. Vincents 1-6
Moynalvey 3-12
The scoreline does not reflect the competiveness of this game played in difficult damp underfoot conditions, having played each other a month ago just three points separated the sides then so another tough encounter was expected here again.
It was a case of Curraha/St.Vincents looking to achieve second successive league honours having claimed the Div. 9 title last year coming up against an unbeaten Moynalvey side in this Div. 8 final.
It was the home side who first troubled the score keeper with a major after sixty seconds.
Isobel Drum opened Moynalvey’s account thirty seconds later, but two minutes later Curraha/St. Vincents looked to be on for a second goal when awarded a penalty, however thankfully for Moynalvey’s sake the effort flew over Abbi McCormack’s cross bar, leaving it 1-1 to 0-1 four minutes into a frantic start.
The next thirteen minutes saw Moynalvey dominate the scoring, reeling off six points without reply to leave the score board read 1-7 to 1-1. Those six points coming from Aoife O’Shea (3), Hollie Doonan, Tara Smith and Shiofra Deegan.
Curraha/St. Vincents added another brace of points, as did Moynalvey through substitute Stephanie Walsh and Hollie Doonan to leave the half time score board read 0-9 to 1-3 in favour of the girls in maroon.
A combination of poor shooting from the home side and staunch Moynalvey defending saw Moynalvey outscore Curraha/St. Vincents 3-3 to 0-3 in the second half.
It was Curraha/St. Vincents who opened the second half scoring with a free, which was countered by a point from Moynalvey full forward Tara Smith, however then came a defining couple of minutes when Moynalvey found the Curraha/St.Vincents net twice within sixty seconds courtesy of Stephanie Walsh and Aoife O’Shea to leave it 2-10 to 1-4 six minutes into the second half.
The two goals essentially killed off any Curraha/St. Vincents hope, although they did add a pair of points either side of an Aoife O’Shea point. Moynalvey tagged on a further 1-1, the point from Tara Smith from an acute angle close range and a goal from Hollie Doonan with virtually the last play of the game to add that extra bit of gloss on the final score line, 3-12 to 1-6.
In a fine team performance, the Moynalvey defence was led here by Rachel Pender and the Mulligan sisters Ciara and Rachel in the half back line, midfielders Ciara Mallee covered all areas of the field not just midfield with Aoife accounting for 1-4, the industrious half forward line grafted hard to set up Tara Smith and Hollie Doonan in the full forward line who accounted for 1-5 between them.
After the game Moynalvey captain Ciara Mallee gladfully accepted the cup on behalf of her jubilant teams mates, management and supporters.
