Nobber 1 – 15 (18) St Brigid’s 1 – 16 (19)
Nobber continued their A League Division 4 campaign on Saturday evening last by making the trip across North Meath to Ballinacree to face St Brigid’s. Nobber left Ballinacree empty-handed with St Brigid’s taking the two points on offer. The black and ambers may look back on this game regrettably as their opponents were on top for the majority of it but Sean Carolans’s charges showed great attitude and resilience towards the end of the game to never give up and almost snatched a win. There was confusion towards the end of the game among supporters whether the game had finished in a draw but it was the blue of Brigid’s who won by the minimum in the end.
The opening quarter seen St Brigid’s taking their scores and they opened up a four-point lead against the black and ambers. Sean Meade and Dale Larkin, the sole scorers for the Deesiders. St Brigid attacked in waves and they were rewarded with scoring a couple of two pointers and a penalty to leave them with a comfortable lead going into the half-time interval. Nobber lost the experienced and influential full back Eanna Fagan through injury during the first half. Further scores from Larkin (3) and Meade (1) kept Nobber ticking over on the scoreboard.
Half-time – Nobber 0 – 6 (6) St Brigid’s 1 – 9 (12)
Sean Meade got the black and ambers up and running with a fine score at the start of the second period. This was Nobber’s only score in the third quarter with St Brigid’s leading by eight points with just 15 minutes remaining. Sean Carolans’s charges outscored their opponents 1 – 8 v 0 – 4 in the final quarter with the majority of the scores coming in the final 10 minutes. It certainly made for a tense and exciting finish. Nobber netminder Dary Hutchinson used his inner Peter Schmeichel reflexes to make a crucial save for the black and ambers.
St Brigid’s were wasteful in attack and Nobber took advantage of this with Niall Farrell, Larkin, and Meade registering a two-point to bring Nobber back into the game. It was truly game on when the towering Mark Condra finished a fine team move to the back of the net to leave only two points between the teams with two minutes remaining. Further scores from Lorcan McEntee and Farrell made a draw game. Unfortunately, from a Nobber perspective they conceded one more score to allow St Brigid’s to regain the lead and win by the minimum in the end.
Nobber may look back at this game and wish they played with the same energy and intent for the first 50 minutes as they did for the final 10 minutes. Substitutes Korede Otubango, and Thomas Murtagh brought direction and energy to the Nobber cause during their introductions.
Next up for Nobber in Round 7 is a home fixture against St Peters, Dunboyne on Wednesday, May 27.
