Wolfe Tones were made to work hard for their four point win over Moynalvey in this round six contest of the Husqvarna Centre PR Coyne Div. 1 football league game played at Páirc Baile Ghib on Saturday afternoon May 16th.
Wolfe Tones 2-14
Moynalvey 1-13
Little would many think it was top of the table side against a bottom of the table side here as Moynalvey turned in one of their better performances against table toppers and unbeaten Wolfe Tones in this round six contest.
Intermediate side Moynalvey gave their senior opponents a run for their money here, having narrowed a six point half time deficit down to just two points ten minutes into the second half, but the experience of Tones meant they were never headed throughout.
Early on it looked like the home side were going to run away with things, as the score board read 1-3 to 0-0 eight minutes in. Tones opening scores coming from Ben Reilly (1-1), Kyle Moran and a Caolán Ward free.
Moynalvey eventually opened their account in the 10th minute through a Sean Duggan free, which was followed up ninety seconds later with an Adam Murphy two pointed free just on the periphery of the 40m arc to leave Reilly’s goal between the sides eleven minutes in, 1-3 to 0-3.
Wolfe Tones centre forward Caolán Ward and Moynalvey’s Padraic Harnan traded two pointers, leaving Reilly’s goal between the sides again, 1-5 to 0-5 at the quarter hour mark.
Moynalvey points from Adam Murphy after Conor Harnan was fouled, followed by a Barry Walsh effort from play left just the minimum between the sides, 1-5 to 0-7, with twenty two minutes gone.
A Tom Gavigan point and a goal from Rian Feeney extended Wolfe Tones’ advantage back out to fives points, 2-6 to 0-7.
Sean Duggan rounded off Moynalvey’s opening half scoring with a point in the 27th minute, but a further brace from the home side courtesy of a Caolán Ward ’45 and a Ross Gallagher point on the stroke of half time left six between the sides when referee Patrick Coyle blew his half time whistle, 2-8 to 0-8.
Wolfe Tones Kyle Moran extended his side’s advantage two minutes after the restart, but Moynalvey were handed a lifeline when following consultation with his umpires referee Patrick Coyle awarded a penalty after Sean Duggan was adeemed to have been bundled over under a lofty effort from Luke O’Halloran, resulting in Adam Murphy dispatching the penalty kick to the back of Ciaran Ó Gallachóir’s net with the assistance of the upright, 2-9 to 1-8.
Murphy followed up his penalty with a free after Tones’ breached the three man up rule; a Vinny Walsh effort from play followed to leave two between the sides ten minutes into the second half, 2-9 to 1-10.
A Caolán Ward two point free broke Moynalvey’s early second half scoring spree, followed up by a Tom Gavigan point from play. Moynalvey’s eleventh point came after Michael Brady won the kickout and ended up on the end of the move again to split the Tones’ upright, 2-12 to 1-11 with ten minutes remaining.
Wolfe Tones responded to Brady’s point with the evergreen Stephen Sheppard clipping over the Moynalvey crossbar following his introduction off the bench. Moynalvey’s Vinny Walsh pointed either side of a Saran O’Fionnagain fisted effort, Walsh’s second being a converted advanced mark, meaning Shane McCoy’s Wolfe Tones side remain unbeaten after six rounds despite Moynalvey’s brave effort here with a full time score of 2-14 to 1-13.
