Kilmainham 2-10, Eastern Gaels 5-8
Kilmainham 2nds took on the newly formed Eastern Gaels first team in Kilmainham on Friday 15th May 2026. This was the second match of the week for the lads. They had a brilliant win on Tuesday night against St. Paul's. Could they make it two from two?
Kilmainham were doing well to field a team. A few lads were not available, but we still managed to tog out 19 players for this fixture. Eastern Gaels started off at a strong pace and spurned two good goal chances before they found the Kilmainham net after 5 minutes after a long ball into the Kilmainham full back line was not dealt with. Scott Lynch replied with a point from a free after Sean King was fouled as he went through on goal. It was a blatant black card for a drag down, but a yellow card was issued. Dean Peppard’s long range effort just had the distance to earn us our second point of the match. Eastern Gaels responded with a good point from play. Danny Newman then hit a nice point after good team play. Estearn Gaels then really upped the gears, hitting 3 very good points in a row. A point attempt by midfielder Terence Daly dropped short and into the Eastern Gaels net on 20 minutes. Eastern Gaels replied with two goals of their own. Two very poor and avoidable goals on our part. Scott Lynch replied for us with a monster two pointer. The same man had a great goal opportunity, unfortunately he dragged his effort wide of goal after some great team play. Troy Flanagan then hit a nice point of that lovely left peg of his as the half time whistle was blown.
Half-time score: Kilmainham 1-6, Eastern Gaels 3-4
We were well in this match. The goals proved the difference in the first half. Eastern Gaels hit the first point of the second half. Scott Lynch hit a free and a point from play to reduce the deficit to three points. Eastern Gaels then hit their fourth goal of the match, followed by a free. Scott Lynch hit another free. The away side then hit a point from play and a free. They looked like they had the game wrapped up. Kilmainham were in no mood to give up. Sean King hit a good point from play, and Scott Lynch finished a brilliant team move to the Eastern Gaels net to set up a good finish. Kilmainham had the game back to 4 points with 8 minutes left on the clock. Kilmainham had their chances to win this one, but some poor decision making at vital times cost them the chance to reduce the deficit. Eastern Gaels punished Kilmainham at the other end. They hit their 5th goal of the match to seal a deserved 7-point win.
While the lads will be disappointed not to have won. They should be very proud of their performances on Friday night. They are getting better with each game. A lot of these
lads have played very little football over the last number of years. Sean King was a real handful at full forward; Scott Lynch had his shooting boots on, Sean Smith made his first full start for Kilmainham and Danny Newman made a comeback. Conor Kilgallen rediscovered his love for midfield. Tom Monghan thought he was Killian Monaghan on the night. He never stopped running and had a great match at corner back. There is a great group of lads here with this team. Stick together and enjoy the games.
Best for Kilmainham were: Tom Monghan, Conor Kilgallen, Scott Lynch and Fergal Black.
