CL Div 2 final: Drumree have that bit extra

Celebration time for Drumree at Dunganny. Pic Orla Crocock

Drumree 2-10 Navan O'Mahony's 1-09

It took extra time to separate the sides in what was an exciting contest on a sunny but chilly afternoon in Dunganny.

Navan O'Mahony's opened the scores with Isabel O’Connor pointing almost from the throw in. Drumree were happy to reply and keep the gap to the minimum throughout the game. One point separated the sides at half-time, with Drumree having wind advantage in the second half.

The second half seen Drumree register first on the scoreboard. But when Ailbhe Leahy took off like run away train there was little doubt where the ball was going to end up, I think the umpire was even reaching for the green flag before it hit the back of the net. But Drumree held firm and popped over a few impressive points, suddenly the score board was now even. Drumree had two opportunities to take the game in the closing stages but the town girls blocked, hooked and solid goalkeeping had the referee closing the game a draw.

Extra time seen Penny Leonard once again find the back of the net, a tally of 2-01 for the No 16 who came in after the start for the injured Louise Griffin. Suddenly Drumree were growing in confidence and had the momentum. Navan gave it their everything but Drumree just had that wall of defence that was hard to break through. The final whistle came as a relief to both spectators and players who were physically exhausted after throwing up a fantastic Div 2 Final. Great credit to both teams

Our thanks as always to Meath GAA for the use of Dunganny. And to all who volunteer to get these games played and to our referees
