Kilmainham 0-10, St. Michael’s 0-12
Our lads welcomed local intermediate side St. Michael’s to Kilmainham on a gorgeous day for football on Saturday 21st March 2026. This was our club's 2nd match in two days. It was brilliant to have been able to provide football for over 30 players in the club this week.
Both teams were missing starters for various reasons. The game was barely on when Scott Lynch fired over a brilliant point off his left boot from distance for us. You could tell our lads were up for this match. Dylan Morgan then hit a two pointer. St. Michael’s responded with a point of their own. Kilmainham were set up very well defensively and were working hard as a team. Mickey Newman and Dylan Morgan were proving a real handful in the full forward line for St. Michael's. Wave after wave of St. Michael’s attacks were turned over or resulted in some wild shooting, yielding no scores. St. Michael’s did manage to get another 3 points on the board in a low scoring half. Dylan Morgan hit another 2 points for us to give us a well-deserved one-point lead at the interval.
Half-time score: Kilmainham 0-5, St. Michael’s 0-4.
St. Michael’s came out for the second half with a point to prove but it was midfielder Larry Morgan who broke through to kick a good point for us to push it out to 2 points. Defensively as a team we were excellent and made it very difficult for St. Michaels’s to get through for scores. Declan Mullen hit the point of the match from an acute angle. Declan and Larry Morgan were brilliant at midfield and worked their socks off. Kilmainham were still keeping their noses in front in a tight and tense match. St. Michael’s pointed a free and then hit a long range two pointer after an advantage was allowed. Dylan Morgan responded with his second two pointer to put us one point up. Then probably the turning point of the match. Corner forward Terence Daly was hauled down by the St. Michael's defender just as he went to shoot on goal. Referee Adrian Corcoran correctly pointed to the spot. Up stepped Scott Lynch but unfortunately his penalty was saved to the goalies left. St. Michael’s went straight up the pitch to score a point to level it with a few minutes left. St. Michael’s then hit the winning score, a two pointer after a foul on one of their forwards. We kept pushing for a winner. Dylan Morgan saw a two-pointer effort go narrowly wide, while some last ditch Kilmainham defending kept St. Michaels out for a goal. With time almost up Kilmainham nearly snatched the win. After some good team play, substitute Troy Flanagan found himself in front of the St. Michael’s goals. His well stuck shot came back off the cross bar and was cleared to safety. St. Michael’s win by 2 points.
While the immediate feeling at the final whistle was disappointment after probably our best team performance of the year, the lads can hold their heads high. After the poor second half showing against Blackhall Gaels in the previous round, we asked for a response and boy did we get it. Every player left everything on the field. A positive performance with plenty to work on in the weeks ahead. Our next Div 3 A league match is a round 3 clash away to high flying intermediate side Castletown on Sat 4th April at 6pm.
Thanks to all our club volunteers for helping out at today’s match. The lovely cup of tea, treats and warm welcome doesn’t go unnoticed. Thanks also to everyone that came to cheer us on. We appreciate it your support.
