Moynalvey’s second team got their PMC Physiotherapy Div. 9 league off to a winning start with a six point win over Blackhall Gaels at Kilcloon on Friday night March 20th.
Blackhall Gaels 3-9
Moynalvey 4-12
Friday night lights saw Moynalvey make the short journey up the road to Kilcloon to play neighbours Blackhall Gaels with both clubs well familiar with each other, forming allegiances at Independent and Regional championship level.
It was Moynalvey who led by six at half time, with the same margin between the sides when referee Marcas Ó Donnchú blew his full time whistle.
Blackhall Gaels opening the scoring in the 8th minute with a Conor Duffy point. James Kelly opened Moynalvey’s account sixty seconds later which was followed up by a brace of points from midfielder Paul Corcoran to leave it 0-3 to 0-1 to the maroon and white side after fourteen minutes.
A Conor Duffy free for the home side was responded to by a pair of James Kelly frees for the visitors to leave it 0-5 to 0-2 with twenty four minutes played.
The first piece of light was put between the sides when Moynalvey raised two green flags within ninety seconds, the first a brilliantly finished effort from an acute angle by Conor Quinn leaving Blackhall goalkeeper Kieran Devaney with no chance and the second a Luke O’Halloran fisted effort after Luke Duffy’s point attempt was deflected towards goal, 2-5 to 0-2 with twenty six minutes played.
Blackhall Gaels responded to this two goal set back with 1-1 of their own, with Moynalvey’s James Kelly rounding off the first half scoring with a point in the 59th minute to leave the score board double scores at half time, 2-6 to 1-3.
The first two points of the second half went Blackhall’s way reducing the deficit to four, 2-6 to 1-5.
Then up stepped David Regan, the impressive centre back sending over three points within ninety seconds, the first a regular point while the second was a two pointer from outside the 40m arc, leaving it 2-9 to 1-5 eleven minutes into the second half.
A pair of points from Blackhall’s Cillian McIvor left it 2-9 to 1-7, but a point attempt from Moynalvey substitute Ray Ryan deceived Devaney in the Blackhall net for Moynalvey’s third goal, followed up by a Paul Corcoran point to leave Moynalvey with a healthy 3-10 to 1-7 lead with a quarter of an hour remaining.
Failing to give up the fight, 2-1 in four minutes had the home side right back in the game, trailing by only two points, 3-10 to 3-8, with ten minutes left on the clock.
A pair of points from substitute Ray Ryan either side of a rocket of a goal from David Regan repelled any further Blackhall comeback, although the final score of the game did go the way of the home side, leaving the score board read 4-12 to 3-9 in favour of Moynalvey at full time.
Best for Moynalvey here were David Regan, Paul Corcoran, James Kelly and Darragh Branigan.
