Seneschalstown's Jamie Norris

Seneschalstown 1-13 St. Patrick’s 1-10

Seneschalstown began their Tommy Dowd Oil  Football League Division 6 with a victory in a tricky assignment in Stamullen against hosts St. Patrick’s on Friday evening. Having trailed by the slenderest of margins at the interval, Seneschalstown produced a strong second half performance to secure the two points on offer.

The home side opened the scoring after two minutes with a point from play but Seán Davis kicked the first of his six points on the night less than a minute later to get Seneschalstown off the mark. The visitors task became all the more difficult when after five minutes referee Robbie Barrett spotted a foul in the Seneschalstown square off the ball and awarded St. Pat’s a penalty which was dispatched to the net.

The sides exchanged the next four points before the quarter hour mark with Jamie Norris kicking a free and Cormac Carolan breaking through a tackle to loft over from play as the home side lead by that earlier goal.

Seneschalstown did defend well throughout and started to enjoy a short period of dominance around the twenty minute mark an drew level with three points in a row courtesy of the Mullen brothers, Ross and Eoin from play and a left footed free from Sean Davis.

Two points in quick succession in the run up to half time for the Stamullen outfit restored their advantage however Jamie Norris had the final say of the half as he popped over from close range to leave St. Pat’s 1-05 to 0-07 up at the break.

The home side stretched their lead out to two points three minutes after the resumption but Seán Davis was on target with an effort from outside the two point arc to draw the sides level and when the same player was on target from a free closer to goal it started to swing momentum in Seneschalstown’s favour.

The home side equalise but Liam Maguire got in around the back to hoist over and put Seneschalstown back in front after 41 minutes. The home side levelled again going into the final quarter but two crucial scores from Jamie Norris entering the final quarter are ultimately what tipped the scales in Senschalstown’s favour.

He kicked a free after 48 minutes to leave it at 0-12 to 1-08 before conjuring up a goal from a narrow angle having got in along the endline. The strike wasn’t the cleanest from Norris but Seneschalstown didn’t care as they lead by four which on the balance of play they probably deserved.

After missing a couple of opportunities to extend their advantage, St. Patrick’s notched up two in a row to make Seneschalstown sweat before the finish but Seán Davis made sure of the win with the final point of the game to get Seneschalstown off to a winning start in Division 6.
