Meath cámogs produced a stirring late second-half comeback to secure a thrilling draw against Carlow in today's National League game in Donaghmore Asbbourne.
Carlow made a blistering start to the game, stunning the home side by registering the opening five scores without reply. Their early dominance was underlined by a well-taken goal by Abhainn Coad, helping them to build an impressive 1–04 to 0–00 lead in the opening minutes and putting Meath firmly on the back foot.
Struggling to find their rhythm, Meath found themselves chasing the game throughout the opening half, with Carlow maintaining control and carrying a seven-point advantage into the break. The halftime whistle came as a welcome relief for the home side, offering a crucial opportunity to regroup and reset.
Despite lingering doubts among the supporters at the start of the second half, there was no such uncertainty within the Meath camp. Emerging with renewed determination, the Royals began to chip away at the deficit. The introduction of fresh legs proved pivotal, injecting energy and urgency into their play.
Gradually, hard-earned points began to flow, and the momentum swung decisively in Meath’s favour. What once looked like an insurmountable gap was reduced to just 3 points, the 2. The home crowd, although modest in number, found their voice and were urging the girls on.
With the game entering its closing stages, Meath were now firmly on top. Wave after wave of attacks piled pressure on the Carlow defence, and the gap narrowed further to a single point, setting up a dramatic finale.
The defining moment arrived when Ella O Brien punished a badly cleared ball from the Carlow defence, she set up a well-worked move to Emma Regan who delivered perfectly into the path of Olivia O'Halloran. As she gathered possession, a roar went up from the crowd, willing her to split the posts. Showing remarkable composure under pressure, O’Halloran lifted and struck the ball cleanly.
For a brief moment, all eyes followed its path in anxious anticipation, before the umpire raised the white flag to signal the equaliser, sparking scenes of celebration among the Meath players, management, supporters and let's not forget relief for her mammy!!!!
The final whistle followed, confirming a hard-earned draw for Meath. Having trailed by seven points at halftime, the Royal Queens could take immense pride in a spirited and determined second-half display that turned the tide and salvaged a memorable result.
Kerry beat Derry and Meath got the point they needed to join the Kingdom in the final, with Carlow relegated.
