Gaeil Colmcille 2nds had the short trip to Cortown for the opening round fixture of the AFL Division 5. Kells were applying their trade at this level after relegation in 2025 and against the breeze found themselves 0-02 to no score down with 8 minutes on the clock.

Two quick fire points from Brian Hanlon and Ajay Tormey saw the sides level and when Charlie Twomey pointed in the 13th minute left Kells ahead by 1. A superb two pointer for Cortown saw them regain the lead but Tormey added his second point to level things up once again.

Cortown did take the lead again but the turning point in the half came when Tormey slipped through Keelan Sheridan and Sheridan was unselfish and squared the ball to Zak Griffin to tap into an empty net. Kells got their second goal on 26 minutes, again a well worked move ended in the hands of Twomey who made no mistake.

Cortown added another point but two points from Tormey saw Kells lead 2-06 to 0-07 at the break.

Benny Reddy introduced Conor Óg Ferguson, Fionn Smith and Liam Devine at half time for Tormey, Farrelly and Griffin and right from the start Ferguson got in on the act, the 17 year old brook through and slotted over a point.

Credit to the home side they hit the next three scores in a row to leave the between them but in the 40th minute Peter O’Halloran signalled for a penalty and Twomey made no mistake. The fresh legs told for Kells and substitutes Devine and Barry Farrelly pushed Kells seven clear and Hanlon made that 8 in the 50th minute.

Farrelly hit arguably the score of the match with a wonder strike on the edge of the two point arc from a tight angle while a rare point from Fionn Smith left 10 between the sides. Conor Óg got his second score of the half and that was followed by a third goal for Twomey to round off his hat trick and a fine display from Centre Forward by the Gaeil Colmcille Minor.

Keelan Sheridan rounded off the scoring for Kells who recorded a comfortable win although it didn’t look that way midway through the first half. Special note to Cormac Mattimoe who lined out between the sticks for Kells after a long lay off and a clean sheet, some great kicking and a fine save in the first half  helped Gaeil Colmcille to the win.
