FL Div 1: Rough start for Gaeils

March 15, 2026

Gaeil Colmcille's Adam Muldoon

Ratoath 3-17 Gaeil Colmcille 2-08

Gaeil Colmcille travelled to Sean Eiffe Park to face Ratoath in the League opener of the Husqvarna Centre PR Coyne Division 1.

The home side and beaten County Finalists in 2025 all but won the game in the opening quarter and got off to the best possible starts after a shot in the opening 30 seconds dropped short and clipped the crossbar and fell kindly to the Ratoath forward to tap home.

This was followed by two points in a row before Evan Sheridan got Kells on the board with an excellent two point shot in the 5th minute. Both sides traded scores with Aaron Browne pointing for the Gaeils but Ratoath hit three in a row to lead by 6 with 12 minutes played.

Liam Barry hit a lovely free on 13 minutes but again it was three points in a row for Ratoath that saw their lead stretch to 9 as Kells had Fionn Smith in the sin bin for a black card. Kells got a lifeline before half time after good initial work from Liam Devine who found Sheridan, Sheridan then played in Ajay Tormey who found the back of the net from an acute angle to cut the lead to 6.

Ratoath didn’t let that effect them and two points in a row was followed by a second goal and say Kells trail 2-12 to 1-04 at the break.

Ratoath picked up where they left off in the first half with a two pointer from Daithi McGowan followed by a third goal that all but put the game to bed. A second two pointer from McGowan had the home side lead 3-16 to 0-04 with Kells struggling to get any rhythm.

Two scores from Ajay Tormey got Kells first of the half one from a placed ball and another with the left after a well worked move. Ratoath responded with a point in the 40th minute which remarkably was their last of the game. Gaeil Colmcille rallied and their was impressive Adult League debuts for Conor Óg Ferguson who started and Charlie Twomey who was introduced as a second half substitute.

Tormey added another point before Adam Muldoon sprung from wing back to get Kells second goal of the game. Kells had an opportunity for a third goal but Tormey saw his penalty saved by the Ratoath keeper. A left footed effort from Daniel Farrelly finished the scoring in the game as Ratoath picked up the two points. Donaghmore/Ashbourne awaits for Kells in round 2 with both sides suffering opening round losses.
