Kilmainham 2-11, Moynalty 2-17
Kilmainham and Moynalty contested the Tailteann Shield Final on Sunday 8th March 2026 on Carnaross’s lovely new pitch. Both teams saw this match as a chance to grab some early season silverware and also saw it as another competitive match ahead of the league commencing this weekend. This match was a dress rehearsal for their championship opener in August.
Kilmainham had the wind advantage in the first half. The match started off at a blistering pace with a brilliant catch and surging run by midfielder Mickey Newman, who set Ger Morgan free to bury the ball to the Moynalty net with the first attack of the match. Moyanlty responded with four points in a row. Dylan Morgan then hit the next two points for Kilmainham. The game was end to end at this stage and had a real championship feel to it. Kilmainham were cutting through the Moynalty defence with ease but did not convert their goal chances, while Moynalty were accurate when they got into good scoring positions. Those missed goal chances by us proved decisive in the end. Dylan Morgan hit a brace of points, Moynalty responded, before Mickey Newman fired over. Moynalty responded again before Dylan Morgan hit a two pointer to put us two up as we headed for half time.
Half time score Kilmainham 1-7, Moynalty 0-8
Moynalty had the wind elements in the second half. A two pointer on 4 minutes had the match level. Larry Morgan responded with a good point from play. Kilmainham were starting to bring the ball into tackles and they got turned over too easily. Moynalty started to run the ball through the hands and emptied their large bench to hit a goal and four points in a row as they were starting to get on top of the breaks at midfield. Their goal was particularly disappointing to concede as the Moynalty substitute got in to easy to fire low to the Kilmainham net. Dylan Morgan pointed in response. Just as the game seemed to be slipping away from us, Ger morgan fire his second goal to the Moynalty net to bring the deficit back to 2 points. Moynalty then hit a brilliant two pointer to push it back to 4. Kilmainham kept pushing to keep in the game, Another Dylan Morgan point had it back to 3 points. Kilmainham were pushing hard to get a goal to tie the match. With gaps appearing as we chased the match, a Moynalty point attempt dropped short and ended up in our net on 30 minutes to seal the win. Mickey Newmans goal attempt thumped off the cross bar and Freddie Newmans goal attempt was saved by Johnny Lynch in the Moynalty goals as they held out for a tight but deserved win on the day.
It is always disappointing to lose a final but the players can be immensely proud of their performances. They gave it everything until the final whistle. Congratulations to our neighbours Moynalty on the win in a good sporting match. The lads must dust themselves down and recover quickly as they face intermediate side Blackhall Gaels in the first round of the Division 3 A League this Friday 13th March at 8pm in Kilcloon.
