Kildalkey's Nicky Potterton

Kildalkey 1-17 Kilmessan 1-15

Kildalkey seniors headed for Kilmessan on Sunday evening for this Brendan Davis cup game and came away with a win after a close hours hurling where Kilmessan led for most of the game but Kildalkey got their noses in front at the finish thanks to a well taken Nicky Potterton goal.

The Kilmessan pitch was in excellent condition after a couple of months rain and held up great and the home side made the early running hitting a flurry of points and got in for an early goal to lead 1-6 to 0-1 after 15 minutes but with good points from Paddy Conneely, Nicky Potterton, Kevin McKeon and Conor Kearney the went in at halftime only 0-10 to 1-9 behind and got themselves back into the game.

The second half was point for point with Nicky Potterton hitting 4 frees along with a Kevin McKeon point from play and a great score from Coneely after a catch from a long puckout from David Harmon to leave it 0-16 to 1-13 coming down the home straight.

Harmons long direct puckouts were a feature of the game as well as his assured handling in around the goals .

Nicky Potterton pointed a free to lead by a point and soon after hit his goal after a great run in from the left wing putting his team 4 points up and Kilmessan hit the last 2 frees as Kildalkey held on for a 2 point win 1-17 to 1-15 a great start to the year.

Both teams were a little rusty and short some regulars but it was the first game of the year and no doubt both teams will improve as the year goes on but both gave it their all in a well contested game for March.
