Royal Gaels 2-04

A last-gasp goal from Royal Gaels in injury time left the sides sharing the spoils in this Round 2 encounter of the Meath LGFA Div 1 FL. O’Mahony’s will be left frustrated, having held the lead for much of the match.

The home side opened the scoring but Isabel Thorp, after a good interception from Ailbhe Leahy, drew the sides level in the tenth minute. Thorp followed this a minute later with a textbook block. Midway through the half, Royal Gaels took the lead with a goal and a point.

O’Mahony’s kicked into gear for the last ten minutes of the half when Orlaith Mallon split the posts from play. Emma Sheridan kicked a great point before Denise McGrath swung the advantage to her side with a goal. Mallon pointed from play to extend the lead before Thorp kicked a score from an impossible looking angle on the cusp of half time.

O’Mahony’s lead was extended in the fourth minute when McGrath pointed from play. An impressive catch from Aileen Falahee stopped a dangerous play from Royal Gaels – from the resulting clearance, McGrath set up Thorp for a point from play but this was to be the last score for the Navan women.

Another scoring opportunity for Royal Gaels was denied when Charlie Murray pulled off a great block. Points in the forty-ninth minute and sixtieth minutes left the dangerous lead of a goal for O’Mahony’s.

Sophia Fitzherbert prevented two attacks with good dispossessions but Royal Gaels were relentless in attach. A brave tackle from Sarah Powderly blocked a goal shot but the ball scrambled loose and a Royal Gales forward directed it to the net. O’Mahony’s had possession for the remainder of the match but were unable to work the winning score.
