Cortown 1-7 Drumconrath 1-7
On his debut for the Club, Paudie Rennicks rescued a draw for Cortown against Drumconrath on Wednesday night with the final kick of the game.
It was a forgettable affair from start to finish in truth, if it was a pantomime you would have booed it was that bad at times!
The visitors struck the opening two scores of the contest before Cortown opened their account some 20 minutes in thanks to a Cian Loughran free. The wind-assisted Drums stretched their lead to four prior to Loughran converting hus second free of the evening.
They scarcely deserved it but Davy Wright's team drew level on the stroke of half time, Aaron Smith the unlikely goalscorer pouncing on a loose pass from Paudie Rennicks to stab home the equaliser.
Drumconrath raced out of the traps second half, registering a goal and a point quickly immediately after the restart.
The home sides response was slow initially but quickfire points from Kian Fitzsimons and Hugh Staunton did bring the men in yellow back within two.
Tempers frayed late on with old rivalries reignited, a straight red card for Drumconrath's Oran Brady the end result of all of that nonsense.
Despite misfiring throughout the second half, Cian Loughran held his nerve to curl over a two-point free to restore parity with time ebbing away.
Gordon Weldon's men looked to have won it approaching stoppage time but there was yet time for more late drama. Luca Brady was denied from point blank range with Rennicks on hand to spoon the ball over with the rebound seconds before Seamus O'Connor's full time whistle sounded.
Neither side progress to the final of the Tailteann Shield meaning their next assignments will be the League in just under two weeks with plenty in the way of improvement needed. Cortown will be heartened by the performance of Cian Madden who was outstanding at corner back.
