Seneschalstown 0-12 Simonstown Gaels 0-10

Seneschalstown picked up a first win at adult level in the new club season when seeing off the challenge of Simonstown Gaels in Fr. Tully Park on Tuesday night.

24 hours after the Senior sides served up an entertaining game in calm and dry conditions, the second string outfits were hampered by the rain that fell throughout the game with both sides making numerous handling errors over the hour along with other mistakes that wouldn’t occur when the ground hardens up.

In a low scoring opening quarter two points were shared between the sides with Neil Darby getting the opener for the men in yellow after just under three minutes. Simonstown replied with their first point after 12 minutes.

After a struggle for scores early on the sides traded points in the 19th minute with Darby on target again to cancel out Simonstown’s slender lead and this sparked an eventful final ten minutes of the opening period.

The visitors moved three ahead by the 25th minute courtesy of a two point effort from play followed up a single point score as they threatened to make a bit of headway.

However the home side’s response before the break was impressive as they reeled off three points on the bounce. Shane Mulvany flashed the ball over from close range before Mark Fox finished off a superb team move off his left foot to leave the minimum between the teams. Dylan Keating tied the game up off his trusty left boot before Simonstown had the last say of the half to edge in front by 0-06 to 0-05 at the break.

Seneschalstown came out of the traps at the start of the second half with a renewed vigour and after Liam Dillon put them ahead in the 34th minute from a well struck two points free, the Yellow Furze men never looked back.  Mark Fox repeated his antics from the first half with another left footed point to double the advantage. The lead was stretched to four points when Dillon was accurate off the ground with another two point free to leave the score at 0-10 to 0-06 after 38 minutes with the same player adding a close range free seconds later before Simonstown got forward for their first score since the interval.

David Fox tagged on a point from close range to restore Seneschalstown’s five point lead heading down the final stretch but like the night before, it was the team trailing that finished the stronger as Simonstown reeled off the final three points from the 53rd minute onwards as Seneschalstown didn’t score. Despite the deficit being down to two points, the hosts didn’t look like losing and started 2026 with a fine win.
