Feis Cup: Youthful Dunboyne fall short

February 09, 2026

Dunboyne's Jason Gleeson

St Peter's, Dunboyne...1-11 Gaeil Colmcille...2-13

Despite a vastly improved second half showing, a youthful Dunboyne side had to give best to the Kells side who had a good quantity more of established names on show in this Feis Cup opening round encounter at Grangegodden on Saturday afternoon.

The home side had most of the heavy lifting done from their own perspective in the first half. At the end of which they led by 0-05 to 1-11. The goal, actually the first score in the game, coming after three minutes from the burgeoning Liam Devine. Son of the great Jody.

David Gallagher’s young team - seven of whom were playing senior club football for the for the first time - acclimatised to their new environment and the requirements thereof on the hoof and very nearly pulled it off.

Ross Reynolds raised a green flag while points from Robbie McCarthy, Jason Gleeson and Cathal Melia put them right back on the coat tails of the locals until a late goal from Harry Butler settled the issue.

While it’s never nice to lose, it is a day from which there will be much learned.
