Seneschalstown's Charlie Finnegan

Seneschalstown 5-15 Donaghmore/Ashbourne 1-12

Defending champions Seneschalstown rubber stamped their passage through the semi-finals of this year’s competition with a comfortable double scores victory over Donaghmore/Ashbourne in a damp Fr. Tully Park on Friday night.

Once Collie Scanlon netted for the opening three minutes in, Seneschalstown never looked back. Scanlon’s goal came after the midfielder punched a hole in the visitors defence before finishing himself to get the home side off to the perfect start.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne replied with their opening score in the eighth minute but Jamie Norris put the finishing touches on a fine move involving Cian Commons and Charles McCarthy from Colm McDonnell’s kickout for Seneschalstown’s opening white flag.

The sides continued to swap scores early on as Collie Scanlon added a point to his earlier  goal and it was 1-02 to 0-03 after twelve minutes. Two Cian Commons frees after fourteen and sixteen minutes cancelled out a Donaghmore two point effort and from here on Seneschalstown began to turn the screw.

Charlie Finnegan, Jamie Norris and Jamie Barry all kicked points from play as Seneschalstown played some good attacking football. In the 22nd minute Seneschalstown, and Scanlon got their second goal.

Jamie Barry found a bit of space in the Ashbourne half and Scanlon made another lung bursting run off Barry’s shoulder. The defence seemed to part like the red sea and Scanlon, despite the best efforts of the Donaghmore/Ashbourne keeper, raised another green flag.

Immediately Seneschalstown were on the rampage again. A ball was played over the top into Jamie Norris and he got there just before the goalkeeper who brought Norris to the ground. Charlie Finnegan assumed responsibility and made mistake and Seneschalstown had three goals by the 23rd minute.

Finnegan once again showed his accuracy from deadballs when he nonchalantly stroked over a two point free to push the lead out to 13 points. The visitors got the last score of the half but Seneschalstown were well on their way to victory.

The ‘Moores got the opening score of the second half but Charlie Finnegan slotted another two point free to get Seneschalstown going again. He added a single point free in the 38th minute before Donaghmore/Ashbourne hit back hit back with two points in a row.

Finnegan was certainly standing up for his side and he continued to add to his tally, this time with an effort from play. Jamie Barry kicked his second from a close range free after 48 minutes and Finnegan had another flag soon after.

With ten minutes to go, Seneschalstown had their fourth goal. Wing forward Seán Reilly was bearing down and goal before he was upended in the large square. Charlie Finnegan finished the penalty with aplomb.

Ashbourne continued to battle on and put their tenth point on the scorebaord before Seneschalstown substitute Cathal Clarke marked his introduction with a fine point.

Cian Commons goal in the 56th minute, where his point effort dropped into the net was the meat in the sandwich of two ‘Moores points before they had the last say of the hour with a goal as the clock entered injury time.

As word came through that St. Colmcille’s had beaten Navan O’Mahony’s in the other group game, it confirmed that Seneschalstown had topped the group and will play St. Patrick’s in a home semi-final with a date and time yet to be confirmed.
