Gaeil Colmcille got their U19 campaign off to a shaky start with a three point win over Skryne in Grangegodden on Saturday afternoon.
With the aid of the first half breeze, Skryne took a 0-04 to 0-01 lead with 10 minutes played and Kells were struggling to find the target despite creating the opportunities. Goal chances came and went and Skryne were content to soak up the early possession exchanges.
Liam Devine, Oisin Walsh and Jack Butler all pointed for the home side who now trailed by the minimum 0-05 to 0-04 with 20 minutes played. Two further points for Gaeil Colmcille from Devine and Walsh saw the Kells men take the lead for the first time leading 0-06 to 0-05 with first half almost up. There was still time for Skryne to draw level before the break at six points a piece.
Now with conditions in their favour, Kells started to make amends and points from John Gormley and Walsh built up a two point lead. Gormley added a second score before Skryne got their first of the half. Gaeil Colmcille opened up the Skryne defence on numerous times in the second half but they still couldn't find that three pointer.
Skryne were level once again at 0-09 each but Walsh and a Shane Callagahan point from full back put Kells back two in front. With The Gaeils leading by two points, the turning point in the game came in the final five minutes when Skryne thought they had took the lead with a goal but for Referee Kieran Olwell to pull the play back for an illegal handpass.
Kells took advantage of Skryne's misfortune and Devine hit a monster two pointer to stretch the lead. Skryne kept in the game and two points in a row pulled the game back to two points as Kells led 0-13 to 0-11 but Oisin Walsh sealed the win with his fifth point of the afternoon to the joy of the Kells support. Up next for Gaeil Colmcille will be Dunderry to Grangegodden this Saturday at 2pm while Skryne take on Simonstown.
