IHC final: 14 man Kilskyre/Moylagh make history

Willie McGrath wins a free for Kilskyre/Moylagh during the Meath IHC final against Rathmolyon at Pairc Tailteann

Kilskyre/Moylagh 2-14 Rathmolyon 0-12

Kilskyre/Moylagh claimed their first ever Meath Intermediate Hurling Championship title with eight points to spare over Rathmolyon at Pairc Tailteann. 

Before amalgamating with Moylagh, Kilskyre claimed IHC titles in 1965, 1969, 1982 and 1994.

The North Meath combination held a 1-6 to 0-6 interval advantage. Darren O’Higgins opened the winners account and by the 16th minute they were 1-4 to 0-1 in front, captain Willie McGrath getting in for the opening goal. Rathmolyon were depending on Joey Christie for scores and the talented corner forward got all his sides opening half points from frees.

Tom Gilsenan’s men were dealt a blow on the 25th minute when referee Stephen Masterson issued a straight red to half back Eoin Briody.

A McGrath brace and a delightful point from Tom Shine increased Kilskyre/Moylagh’s lead in the early stages of the second half. Christie kept the Village in the game with three unanswered frees but from there on Kilskyre/Moylagh dominated. Daire Shine sent over a long range free, another McGrath brace and another magnificent score from Tom Shine arrived before Darren O’Higgins outpaced the Rathmolyon defence and score a brilliant individual goal. Soon after the final whistle arrived to spark scenes of jubilation rarely seen at the Navan venue.

After the game Nick Fitzgerald gave the honour of presented the Mick Leonard Cup to Kilskyre legend Paddy Baugh who delightfully handed over the silverware to Willie McGrath.
