All County JFC Div 7 semi final: Drums comeback condemns Cortown

Cortown's Conor Mulroe

Cortown 1-12
Drumconrath 1-14

For the second week in succession, Cortown suffered Semi-Final heartbreak, this time losing out to Drumconrath in the Junior All-County Football Championship on Saturday evening in Castletown.

Playing with the aid of a gentle breeze in the opening half, Cortown made much of the running early on. Scores from Conor Mulroe, Charlie Smith and a Jake Coyne brace had Martin McGovern's men 0-4 to 0-2 to the good at the end of the opening quarter.

The second quarter followed an identical trajectory with Elliot Reilly, Colm Tully, Smith and a free from Coyne helping the team in yellow into a 0-8 to 0-4 half time advantage. They were however indebted to evergreen netminder Butch Casserly who pulled off a stunning stop just before the break.

Tully provided the perfect start to the second half with a goal in the early exchanges, his second of the season against Drumconrath.

Leading by 7, Drumconrath's main man for first and second team, the lightly raced Matthew Durnin grabbed a hold of proceedings. First he orchestrated the Drums goal which sprung the comeback.

A couple of scores followed from the men in red before Coyne pushed Cortown two clear again. However Durnin stuck the first of his three second half two-pointer as the tide firmly changed in Drumconrath's direction.

Late scores from the father-son duo of Elliot and Micheal Reilly threatened to spark a late revival but Drumconrath held on to seal a final date with St Vincent's who accounted for St Paul's in the corresponding Semi-Final.
