Navan O’Mahony’s 2-22 Clann na nGael  1-18

Navan O’Mahony’s qualified for the semi final of the Senior B HC with a seven point win over Clann nan Gael in Páirc Tailteann. Eight different scorers helped O’Mahony’s over the line.

Clann na nGael were quick off the mark and had a score within eighteen seconds. A minute later, Jack Walsh pointed a free. When Walsh stood over a free in the sixth minute, Clann na nGael had edged ahead with two points. Cormac Keyes drew the game with a point from play from this puckout before Sean McDermott gave O’Mahony’s the edge for the first time.

The same player picked out the oncoming Dermot McKenna with a pass before the latter rattled to the net. Another score came from a McDermott, but this time from midfielder Lorcan. From the resulting puckout, Jack Flynn caught the ball and passed to Walsh who split the posts.

With six points separating the sides, a certain goal shot from Clann na nGael was denied by impressive pressure from Finn McNally, after Shane McCarthy had done similar in the other corner. Sean McDermott added another point to leave seven in it.

A purple patch for the Athboy-Ráth Chairn outfit saw them add three points (one from a sideline) and the momentum in their favour. Lorcan McDermott broke this run with an excellent point but they responded well to add another three, leaving the minimum in it approaching half time. A late sideline from McKenna was prevented from going over by the netminder before Sean McDermott played the ball to Rían Porter who split the posts. A Sean McDermott point was the last score of the half.

Navan O’Mahony’s 1-10 Clann na nGael 0-10

Walsh pointed a free within a minute of the resumption to leave four in it again but this was short-lived when Clann na nGael split the posts from play. Another free came from  Walsh and in the play from the resulting puckout, Clann na nGael found the net to leave a single point between the sides.

O’Mahony’s responded well with a converted free and Lorcan McDermott made a great run through the Clann na nGael defence. Although his shot was saved, as was a rebound shot by Finn Malone, McKenna successfully directed the ball from the scramble into the net to leave a gap between the teams again.

When Shane McCarthy pointed from play, six points separated the sides. The next ten minutes saw the teams exchange points, with McDermott, McKenna and Keyes on target for O’Mahony’s.

Sean Davis made his mark when introduced from the bench, setting McDermott up for a score with his first touch of the ball. With the clock clicking down, he got his own name on the score-sheet twice, the last two scores of the game.

With Clann na nGael needing a goal in the final ten minutes, good play from Eoghan Nugent, Ben McEntagart and Michael Reavey proved crucial in ensuring this didn’t happen. Killyon await in the semi-final.
