SFC: Gaeils disappoint in Dunganny

August 18, 2025

Gaeil Colmcille's Seamus Mattimoe

Gaeil Colmcille 1-11 Skryne 1-19

Dunganny’s immaculate new pitch 6 was the venue for the second round fixture between Gaeil Colmcille and Skryne with the  winners most likely to advance to the Quarter Finals.

Conn Cleary’s men made one change to the starting fifteen from the opening round win with the hero of the match Fionn Reilly replacing Johnny Gormley and it was Reilly that opened the scoring with a point in the second minute. Skryne’s response was emphatic and Oisin Keogh done excellently to get in behind the Gaeils defence and blast beyond Barry Farrelly.

That goal was followed by a point and Skryne led by three points before an Andrew Gormley free got Kells second point of the game. Both sides traded the next two scores with Gormley grabbing a second free after a goal opportunity but Oisin Reilly’s effort was blocked down and after regathering possession a free was awarded that Gormley tapped over.

Skryne hit three points in quick succession with a one pointer followed by a two point play but Seamus Mattimoe’s 21st minute point kept the Gaeils scoreboard ticking while playing against the opening half breeze. That would be the last score for Gaeil Colmcille in the half as Skryne struck another two point free and two points from play to take an eight point lead at the break 1-09 to 0-04.

Just before the break Kells task was made that bit harder with Wong back Daniel Farrelly being shown a black card meaning it would be 14 men for the opening 8 minutes of the second half. Skryne capitalised on the extra man and got the first score of the second half to stretch 9 points clear.

A beautifully struck 45 from Adam Donnelly got Kells first point of the second half but Skryne responded soon after to cancel that score. The next four points were shared as Oisin Reilly and Ajay Tormey struck two nice points from similar positions but Kells still trailed by 9 points with 13 minutes remaining.

With the new rules, a game can change in a blink of an eye and Kells were hoping that would be the case as Mattimoe hit a two pointer and when Ryan Farnham pounced on a fumbled ball in the Skryne box to poke home to the back of the net there was only four between the teams with 10 minutes plus injury time remaining.

But credit to Skryne they never panicked and stuck to their game plan and hit five points in a row including a two pointer to once again go nine clear. Farnham and Gormley added two more points but a final free from Skryne sealed the eight point and deserved win for the Tara men.

Gaeil Colmcille must dust themselves down for a final round game with Dunboyne in two weeks and depending on results in the Summerhill and Dunboyne game Sunday, every possibility remains for Kells going into round 3 with qualifying for the Quarter-Final, Relegation playoff and safety all an option.
