Trim 2-18 Meath Hill 1-12
Meath Hill made the trip to Simonstown on Sunday morning to kick off their Senior Football Championship campaign against Trim — and for large parts of the contest, they gave as good as they got. But in the end, a more clinical Trim side pulled away, using key moments and scoring bursts to secure the Round 1 win.
Meath Hill started the brighter, settling quickly and asking early questions of the Trim defence. Jack McMahon won a free that Gary Breslin converted confidently, before Breslin added a superb second — cutting inside and firing over after a strong solo run. Trim responded with a composed point from the edge of the D, and from there began to click into gear. A quick 1-2 without reply saw them take the lead, though the goal came with controversy, as Ciarán Caulfield appeared to bounce the ball twice before finishing. The officials waved play on, and Trim took full advantage.
To their credit, Meath Hill responded well. A tidy team move ended with James Mooney pointing, and a strong save from Dominic Yorke kept them within touching distance. The Hill then hit a purple patch of their own — Breslin burst through to hammer home a stunning goal, and Jake Gillen added a point to give them a brief lead. Trim, however, punished a defensive mix-up to grab a second goal through Sean Foley, and from there, they finished the half strongly. Six unanswered points, including two-point efforts from James Toher and Aaron Lynch, gave them a comfortable cushion at the break.
Half-time: Trim 2-11, Meath Hill 1-5
Trim picked up where they left off in the second half, adding early points from Lynch and Eoin Sweeney. But Meath Hill were not done yet. A two-pointer from Yorke—stepping up under pressure—was the spark they needed. Cormac Sheehy added a brace of frees, while McMahon and Pierce McGrath chipped in with points from play. The lead was trimmed to just five.
The next few minutes proved decisive. But just as the tide looked to be turning, Trim found another gear. A two-point free punished a breach of the three-up rule, and a trio of rapid-fire scores reasserted their control, snuffing out Meath Hill’s resurgence.
James Mooney added a late point for Meath Hill, but it was Trim who finished the scoring with the final free of the match. While the scoreboard gives Trim a comfortable nine-point win, Meath Hill showed enough throughout the game — particularly in the first half and early in the second — to take positives into their next outing.
They will now turn their attention to a tough challenge against reigning champions Dunshaughlin in Páirc Tailteann on August 15th at 7:30pm.
