Oisin Walsh celebrates after scoring a goal for Gaeil Colmcille during their SFC clash with Summerhill at Trim

Gaeil Colmcille 1-18 Summerhill 0-19

When Jonny Quigley pointed in the 42nd minute, Gaeil Colmcille held a six-point lead over 2023 Senior Champions Summerhill at St. Loman’s Park, Trim and in the 62nd minute Meath Captain Eoghan Frayne looked as if he snatched a draw for the The Hill but for second half substitute Fionn Reilly to grab all the headlines with a two-point monster as time elapsed to large cheers from the travelling Kells support.

Summerhill rushed into a 0-07 to 0-01 lead with 20 minutes on the clock and were full value for their lead as Gaeil Colmcille’s shot selection and misplaced passes allowed Summerhill build up a healthy lead. Daniel Farrelly got Kells second point of the game and first from play in the 21st minute after Andrew Gormley pointed from a free in the seventh minute.

Ajay Tormey added a third point for Kells and then the turning point in the match came in the 24th minute when Oisin Walsh finished to the bottom corner of the net for the opening goal of the game to leave just a point between the teams. Jonny Quigley levelled things up in the 25th minute and by half time Gaeil Colmcille had scored an unanswered 1-06 as Gormley added two more points and Barry Farrelly got the last of the half to leave Gaeil Colmcille 1-07 to 0-07 ahead at the break.

Everyone knew Summerhill would come out fighting and two points in quick succession left the minimum between the teams with just over 60 seconds gone in the second half. Credit to The Gaeils they hit the next two scores thanks to a Seamus Mattimoe free and a two-pointer free from Gormley.

Summerhill responded with another point but three more points for Kells left six between the teams after Farrelly pointed from outside the 40-metre arc for two points and Quigley got his second of the game. Just as Gaeil Colmcille thought they were pulling away Summerhill dragged their way back in to the game and on the 50-minute mark they were just one point between the teams.

Another three points for Kells eased the pressure after a Gormley free was followed by Farrellys second two point free in the 56th minute and it looked as if Kells had done enough but a point was followed by a two pointer from the Hill and Frayne’s equalising score looked like he had grabbed a draw which Summerhill would have snapped anyone’s hand off for with 18 minutes to go.

From the resulting kickout, Ryan Farnham rose highest to pluck the ball, he then managed to get the ball to Evan Sheridan who somehow laid the ball off to Quigley, Quigley quickly spotted an unmarked Fionn Reilly who composed himself and hit a super two pointer to claim the win for the Kells men.
