St. Colmcilles 3-13 Dunboyne 0-17
For the third year running St. Colmcilles have defeated Dunboyne in the Minor Football League Division 1 final. The Seasiders needed goals to see off a determined St. Peters challenge in this third instalment played at Pairc Tailteann.
The winners played with the wind into the O’Mahony’s end and made use of the elements to lead 1-9 to 0-3 at the break. Points from Meath minor captain Eoghan McBrearty (2), Joe Smyth, and Cillian Murphy got them up and running before Luke Kennedy opened Dunboyne’s account. The Cilles were 0-6 to 0-1 up at the end of the first quarter before Smyth finished to the Peters net. Murphy, Dylan Feehan and Smyth added points to give Tom Feehan’s men an eight point cushion at the break.
Caolan Gartlan extended that lead with the first point of the second half before Dunboyne found their feet. Charlie Gallagher opened his account from two frees. Eoghan McDonald kicked his second score before a brace of two pointers from the duo narrowed the gap to 1-11 to 0-13 at the end of the third quarter. The Cilles refused to panic and on the 18th minute McBrearty settled their nerves with a well worked goal. Muphy added a point from a free and with five minutes to go substitute Niall O’Donoghue was in for goal number 3 and open up that eight point gap again. Dunboyne didn’t throw in the towel. Two pointers from Gallagher and McDonald narrowed the gap but time ran out and St. Colmcilles were crowned champions for the third year in a row.
After the game Minor Board Chairman Niall Gogarty presented the Division 1 cup to Cillian Murphy.
