Walterstown 2-18 Clann na nGael 3-11

Having finished top of the table with 19 points from 11 outings Walterstown completed a great league campaign with silverware at Sean Newman Park. These two sides played out a very entertaining draw when they met in round 7 in Waterstown in May. PHOTOS

In a very even opening half Walterstown just edged it at the break 1-10 to 1-7. Their defence found Clann na nGael forwards Ben Corkery and Tomas Doyle a real handful. At the other end the full forward line of Paul Donnellan, Neil McGinley (0-4) and Ruairi O'Dowd were the go to men for the winners.

Conor McEntee opened the Blacks account and by the end of the first quarter they led 0-6 to 0-2. Doyle and Eoin Kelleher narrowed the gap and with five minutes remaining thanks to 1-3 from Doyle the Athboy Rathcairn combination were on level terms, Corkery setting up the corner forward for their first green flag. Walterstown hit back through O’Dowd with a goal to give his team a three point cushion at the break.

McGinley, O’Dowd and Fionnan O'Connor pointed before O’Dowd was in for his second major and Walterstown looked on their way to victory. Like in the round 7 encounter Clann na nGael had other ideas. Corkery sent over his third point before goals from substitute Anthony Swaine and Doyle left the bare minimum in it. McGinley settled Walterstown with his 3rd of the game and they outscored Clann na nGael 0-3 to 0-1 in the home stretch to claim victory.

After the game Ruth Chambers along with sponsor Fergal Shiels (Fusion Workwear) presented the cup to joint captains Conor Farrelly and Ruairi O’Dowd.
