St. Michaels / Nobber 4-21, Wolfe Tones 5-12
St. Michaels/Nobber staged an excellent display of football on the banks of the Owenroe river in Moynalty on Thursday evening and in doing so collected the Group E MFT Cup. To many in the large attendance it was game over at the break as the St. Michaels / Nobber combination led by nine points but credit to the Wolfe Tones lads who recovered admirably from that deficit to loom large in the combination side's rear view mirror for the entirety of the second period.
The momentum swung back and forth in the opening quarter as both sides traded points until the St. Michaels / Nobber lads grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck when the excellent Fionn Murray and C.J. Lynch both found the back of the net within a three minute spell midway through the second quarter which was capped when Korede Otubango managed to squeeze in a point for good measure between the two majors. First half points from Daithi McGovern, Stephen Dolan, Lynch and Murray gave the winners a commanding 2-13 to 1-07 half time lead.
Wolfe Tones came out with a bit more of a cutting edge and within two minutes of the restart had raised two green flags, game on, they added a minor from a '45 but credit to the winners, they never panicked, points from Dolan (free), Murray, Lynch and a great solo effort from Sean Behan kept the scoreboard ticking. The 'Tones kept the pressure on and tested Josh Carolan in the winners goal on several occasions but he was at his best, in fact both keepers were excellent, credit to the winners full and half back lines who were led by Leon McGovern and Niall Rogan who all remained calm while under pressure throughout and cleared their lines with ease. The mid-field duo never put a foot wrong throughout covering every blade of grass on the Moynalty pitch while the winners forward division worked tirelessly throughout.
Behan got on the end of a long ball in and rifled to the back of the net, Niall Rogan and C.J. Lynch added points, then the winners lost Otubango to a second yellow with ten minutes remaining, but the 'Tones kept piling on the pressure which resulted in a further 2-2 but a further minor from Rogan and a well struck goal from substitute Tony Shannon Smith was the icing on the cake for the St. Michaels / Nobber combination.
